Hi guys,
earlier in the week I was pulling into my friends house and as I was slowing down my 6.0 excursion started to jerk and turned off when I came to a stop. The engine ran fine but it would cut off as soon as I put it in drive or reverse. Turns out the torque converter clutch solenoid had went bad. I had my mechanic replace that, both filters and change the fluid in it. Now the truck slips then jerks into 4th gear and 5th gear then continues to slip until it goes into limp mode with the tow/haul mode light flashing. I got it home and the fluid was a little low so I topped it off with mercon lv but it's still acting up.
Any ideas what could be going on? Could another solenoid be bad or could something of not been put back together correctly? It shifted flawlessly before it went into the shop. Is my whole trans shot? Any help would be very appreciated. Thank
My first guess would be that they put the wrong fluid in it. My second would be the clip on the solenoid pack broke when they pulled it and the harness is loose.
Thank you very much for the response. I actually watched them top it off with Valvoline mercon lv so I would have to assume that's what they put in it. I may try to pull it apart this weekend and look myself. I'm leaving towards then not doing something right myself. It shifted fine before unless when the torque converter clutch solenoid went bad it messed something else up. Thanks for giving me somewhere to start.
I wouldn't take anything apart before reading the codes. That will tell you what to look for. Without the codes, it's all guesswork.
Who am I kidding? I won't find time to do it this weekend anyhow haha. I'll let the shop do it. Mark I've been reading through some search results and understand you're the man at these. Have any other ideas on what could be an issue?
So I took it out for another drive today and got it up to good temperatures. A good way to deacrdes what's going on is when it shifting into what I assume is drive and overdrive it has a delay in the shift. It acts like I'm shifitis it into neutral then bombing it back into the drive gear on the steering column. I haven't been able to get it into limp mode again to get codes.
I did find out when the torque converter clutch solenoid was locked up my mechanic put it in low range and drove it around the building which I was less than happy with but I guess I can understand why they did it.
The codes should still be there, but you need a GOOD reader to read trans codes, most DIY scanners won't read them. If you have a laptop get Forscan, search online, it is a very capable diagnostic tool for these trucks, you just need a good OBD2 interface and the software, which is free.
I guess somewhere along the line I forgot to mention when it did go into limp mode yesterday I unhooked the batteries to reset the computer. It was a dumb moment in my part. My mindset was just to reset everything since it had been worked on and I see now how that wasn't my brightest moment.
My brother has a tester from Mac tools. It's a Mac branded scanner but I don't know the quality of it. I know it wouldn't read codes on my 97 7.3. He has a banks programmer also that he says reads codes.

I guess me being far from the expert on transmission I would think if something is stuck and you force it something bad could happen. I'm guessing by your response I'm an idiot 😆 haha. Guess I'm overreacting
So you say the torque converter solenoid was stuck and they replaced it. Something made it stick and it sounds like whatever that was is causing more solenoid issues. Did your transmission guy find anything odd in the bottom of the pan? A second pan drop may be in order for inspection. As Mark says without any codes it's hard to diagnose over the interwebs but this probably isn't a coincidence. There's something more sinister going on.
Yes sir that is correct. I hadn't thought about the issue the way you described them but that would make sense. I'll going to drive it again today and try to get it to go into limp.
Stop driving it until you know what the issue is. Why would you keep driving with a malfunctioning transmission are you made of money and can afford a new transmission when this one gives up.
