So I'm wondering if there was a huge difference between them? I've always avoided first year runs, especially when it involves a new engine. As we all know the 6.0's had there issues.
So what about the 08-10's? I know any one that owns an '08 most likely thinks its the real deal as no one wants to hate their own stuff - but did the above hold true with the '08's? OR were they pretty good from the outset? Any real difference to the '09 and then on to the 10's?
I've read and been told the 6.4's are great to modify and get more power out of them, again I'm just curious how the '08's did with all the new changes.
The 08 was the worst. They fixed a few issues with the 09-10. However the 6.4 have been known to be problematic. I owned a 09 for a short stent. They are easy to get power out of for sure. But when they go they go big.
Drop ops down to the 6.4 forum and read up. My suggestions would be look at a different engine.
If you think the 6.0 had issues then the 6.4 is not the motor for you not to mention terrible fuel mileage. Yea they can be beasts when tuned and with supporting mods but even in stock form the 6.4 is a ticking time bomb, avoid at all cost. If you want a newer truck 13 and up 6.7 is a pretty safe bet and 15 and up is even better.
Of course you are right if you can afford that, or should I say want to afford that. Both of my six-O's gave me good to great service really, had to replace the FICM on my 04 and on this '07 I had to to replace all the passenger side injectors, that's it in 10 years with them, not bad!
So I wanted to know whats up with these 6.4's from experience, good and bad. But I've also read that with some mods you can improve MPG's and reliability. You guys that seem to hate them did you do any mods with them or just leave them stock?
Mine was deleted and tuned. Truck was a beast. The mods takes care of some of these issues. My truck averaged 12 mpg around town and 17-18 on the highway. However there is some issues that are just design flaws that you can’t fix with mods.
The lifters are are known for blowing up around 5,000 engine hours. Cylinder 7 and 8 are normally problems as these are the ones that get fuel dumped in them for regens. Front engine covers are known for wearing through due to the huge cooling systems on these trucks. When that happens it lets coolant into the oil. Poor rocker arm design leads to issues. That’s just scratching the surface.
Not it to mention since International/Navistar was in on this motor the parts are crazy expensive.
Like I said before. Some have had great luck. Others it has been the most expensive truck they have owned. It’s completely up to you. You are asking we are telling. The choice is yours. I feel I had read and knew about some of the problems before I bought mine, but the truck was so nice that I let that win me over, expensive move.
My 363 days of ownership was bitter sweet. Nicest truck I have ever owned with tons of power. But in the end I couldnt handle the pucker factor everytime I heard a new noise and decided it was time to part ways. I added the cost of parts and my monthly payment together for the year and I could have been driving a brand new truck for that. I fixed up the old 7.3 and haven’t looked back. Sure I miss the crew cab, and this truck is rusting our pretty good due to the 10 years in the Midwest but it wasn’t worth the stress.
Hope whatever choice you make it works out well for you.
I had a 08 6.4. mine was a job 3 truck. I didn't have any real problems out of mine. I ran it 86K miles and traded up to a DRW. Mine was stock and ran great.
As a towing motor and worked hard it did good with the emissions.
6.4's do suffer from valve train wear, so changing oil at 5K intervals with good oil helped to keep it down. I liked mine and I do miss it.
Hope whatever choice you make it works out well for you.
Thank you very much! That was a great post. I did Not buy the 6.4 instead I am buying a Dodge after having 3 Super Duty's in a row its Cummins time! I'm sure this will draw some responses from those that are Ford purest but I found a great ride and didn't want to pass on it. I already don't like interior near as much as I have my SD's but the raw power is so awesome with No turbo lag.
Before I got this F350 I test drove a power wagon. I REALLY wanted to like that thing. 4:56, 6spd, selectable lockers... It was perfect. I couldn’t stand it. Everything felt wrong. I guess i’m just a super duty person. There are worse things to be. I’m glad you found a rig that works for you though. Cummins makes some solid engines.
I did Not by a 6.4 or a Dodge. I bout a 2011 6.7 F-350 4x4 Dually and I love it. Yes I know all the issues they had in 11 and 12. I had my wife run the vin at her dealer and most of the bad stuff has been taken care of under warrenty early on.
I love the truck drove 800 miles yesterday coming home and this is hands down the best running Super Duty out of the 4 hat I have had. I'm quite pleased with it and the power blows the 6.0 away.
