Let me know what you have used, price range, used with iphone or android... I actually have an ipad with bigger screen that is easier to read if that could be used. I need to capture misfires (if they are occurring) during a test drive so if that makes any difference to what setup I go for let me know. I never point my nose up at cheap apps and bargain price range, if they work!
I have been very happy with my OBDLink. I have the LX model. It's Android and Windows. For the same price, you get both types of software. The Windows version has a lot more capabilities, obviously. They do have iOS as well.
I tried one of those $20 Amazon readers with Torque, which is freeware, and I could never get it to log data. The forums on the Torque site are a hopeless mess. I gave up on it.
wirelessengineer: I have viewed a couple of dozen so far, good to have a recommendation! a couple have mentioned ABS and transmission codes, have you used that on yours? I actually have 2 vehicles with ABS lights on the dash lit up and one that shifts in/out of second likes it getting hit with a 20lb sledge. Would you assume that the iOS version also offers less than the Windows version? Would be ideal if it could do iOS for some basics but if I had to dig deeper I could drag a laptop out and sync to that. thanks.
EDIT: thanks for the link! Looks like the wifi version is the one that can do iOS, but no bluetooth so I will have to be parked in the driveway to look at the data. But also does Android and Windows. I guess I couldn't use it in the boondocks at all... unless I hook up wifi in the van, hmmmm.
HOLD THE PHONE: they have an MX+ version as well. It has bluetooth AND all the platforms I guess...
I have not tried it with ABS or transmission issues. I haven't had the need, so I don't know about that. I like the fact that it logs GPS (from the phone) along with the data, so you can actually plot it on a map (assuming you have the appropriate software, which I do) and see if there are any correlations with, say, going uphill or downhill.
By the way, my first OBDLink suddenly died within the warranty period, and they replaced it promptly with no questions asked.
I am trying the OBDLink MX+ and after a few hiccups it is working. So many settings making it hard to extract real information, Mode 06 is keeping data that I can view later but I have not been able to create any logs or reports to export/view. Bluetooth disconnects sometimes, not sure I want to stick with wireless... I have not found a Ford Mode 06 definitions chart anywhere on the web, that would probably help a lot. anyone?
