Hi all. I have the Ford 9" rear differential with semi-floating axles and a tapered roller type axle bearing.
I cut this "bearing retainer ring" off my rear axle shafts in order to replace the axle bearings and seals. I am having difficulty finding a replacement. I know this ring does not contact the housing or act as a spacer as the axle must spin inside the housing. Do you know if it is necessary for me to replace the retainer ring or can I do without it?
To be more specific, the order of assembly on the axle shaft from the wheel hub goes like this: Wheel hub, retainer plate, seal, bearing, retainer ring. I've found retainer rings for the DANA 35 and 44 with similar size specs but not for the Ford 9". Any input appreciated. Thanks
O I got a set coming in the mail. I'm sure it's in there then. Thought it would be a different part order. Well while I got your attention should I do anything about my axle housing? It's chewed up don't know if it's bad enough to do anything about it. It was holding oil fine and the bearing was in good shape.. I only had to remove it all because I need to change the pinion seal.

When purchased from Ford, the retainer came with the bearing. It was also available separately. I would assume that a bearing bought from auto parts stores would also include the retainer.
Go back to the parts store, ask for another bearing, open the box and take a look-see.

Thanks Bill, I am waiting to see what I got in the mail.. I had assumed that it was a different part but I am sure with what you all said it is included in the set I got. If not I've got a phone number to call here! Appreciate it.
What type of bearing are you using? Some use tapered bearings with a separate outer race, and others use a complete one piece bearing. If you are using one with a separate race, take the race and test fit it in the axle housing. It should at least be snug. The one piece bearing should also be test fit in the housing before you put it on the axle.
If either one is loose in the housing, you will need to snug it up somehow so it does not slowly spin and eat up the housing. Take a center punch and making dimples in the housing can be a good way to tighten it up and keep it from spinning in the housing.
There are two possible 9" axle bearings used 1974/87. Large ball bearing (used on all 1961/73's), tapered roller bearing introduced in 1974, used thru 1987...on some.
There's no way to know which bearing it is, until an axle is pulled and you take a look-see.
I found out you can use the one piece bearing in place of the tapered roller setup. At the time that is all they offered in the store, so I used it instead of the tapered roller and it seemed to fit and work fine. The tapered roller looks like it could handle more load than the other though.
