Can anyone help to identify these metal bits? I found them in the cavity where the starter fits into (not sure what to call that? Flywheel housing?)
Posted this question in another unrelated thread and didn't get a response...so, I'm trying again.
My guess would be they are the remnants of a failed starter Bendix that were not cleaned out after said failure. The C clip definitely looks like the "stop" for the Bendix and the rollers are likely part of the Bendix sprag assembly.
Thanks guys. Well I hope it IS from an old failed starter and not something internal. The starter did just die, so maybe it's from that? Maybe from the starter before that even. Must not be TOO terribly important if it can't be identified right away...here's hoping anyways. Hah!
The rollers are in what I call a sprag, but others call it an overrun clutch - the rollers can be seen in the diagram below. When I worked for Caterpillar, we used to take the starter drives apart and rebuild them. I doubt one could even by the pieces anymore with the low cost of reman and new starter drive units.

They would likely be important to the device they came from, its just that no one has ever pulled that kinda stuff from where you did.
I would definitely rotate the flywheel and check all the teeth on it. Also check for any marks on the starter side of the flywheel. There's a reason why the starter came apart.
