Advice on 2000 Excursion

Long time since I posted here (Used to have a F150) but i'd appreciate you're feedback. I'm currently looking at the following

Good condition 2000 XLT Excursion 103,000 miles 5.4L Triton 4x4

Pros: Front end has been rebuilt, ball joints tie rods etc, new breaks, new tires, never towed with. Cold started right up, engine Xmission shifted good and body all solid. I drove it, it drives out real nice no vibrations, noises, steering is tight, older gent owns it not driven hard, these trucks last a long time.

Cons: 5.4 Low power, it accelerates like driving a loaded u-haul (which is to say it doesn't actually *Accelerate* it just kind of moves a little faster over time).
Some of the power windows don't work, remote entry door locks don't work

Usage: Taking family snowboarding (mostly) and maybe pulling 16 foot (small) R-Pod Camper. It would be nice to have a rig big enough to get the boards and gear in the back without roof racks etc as the local hill is only an hours drive from here. Toss em' in, spend the day on the snow, unload. Once or twice per month average for boarding in the winter, occasional use pulling a small camper in the summer. So I think the low power wouldn't be a problem for me at this time.

Sticking points:
Asking price 9k... Banks will only loan 5500 (Nada book) ...
I don't know what i'm getting into money wise with the windows and door locks...i'd like to fix them to work. If there are 1k in repairs, i'd have to offer the guy 4500 or so.

Future thoughts: If I could get it for Nada I may consider a turbo or Whipple kit but i'd have to hire the job done. Are there complete kits / tunes?

Appreciate any thoughts you might have about price/offers. Should I offer the guy $4500.... is it worth more than what the banks will loan? Any ideas on how much remote door locks and power windows cost to fix on these?

Thank you!

Door locks are a easy $30 DIY fix.

that said 9k is insane money for a RWD 5.4 Ex. Those go for 4K tops around here, 7-8k will buy you a nice 4X4 v10 and 10k gets you a 4x4 7.3 if you keep a sharp eye.

check craigslist for sacramento CA, plenty of rust free example available.

Forgot to mention it's a 4x4 but that won't change the fact the asking price is crazy. Really appreciate the help. I see what you are saying, there is a really nice White V10 Ex on the Sacramento CL site. Too bad I live in Indiana. I'll throw the guy here a 4K offer and keep looking. Sad thing is, i'll throw him 4K he'll say no and either let it rot or trade it to a dealer for even less. Just the way people are.... Appreciate it!

IND > SMF $150 on southwest

2200 miles, 13 mpg = 150 gallons @ $3 = $500 in fuel

Road trip !

Agreed. I actually paid $2000 for my 2000 V10 4x4, CA truck. It had 157,000 miles on it when I got it last year. Rust free (gold for us in the rust belt). Faded paint (don't care), driver's seat had a rip in it (don't care,) but otherwise all stock and great running. I did replace the heater core, and one of the hoses. I use it to haul 8 people and their ski gear to the slopes 1.5-2 hours away, occasionally haul the race car, or just bomb around town

$9k is crazy money. Is it a local truck?

This!
You would get a completely RUST FREE EX, more power (at the same MPGs as the V-8) and a nice road trip home to get used to it. We here in the rust belt get so used to having vehicles rot away all around us, having a 20 year old rust free ride is almost hard to imagine, but oh so worth the flight and drive home in the long run! I drove my rust free (from LA originally and stayed in the South prior to my ownership) 12.5 MPG EX 705 miles down to Savannah GA to buy a rust free $600 '94 Geo Metro that I then towed the same 705 miles home on a dolly, my fuel bill, uhaul dolly rental and motel room for one night were about equal to the cost of the car, but to me totally worth it for the complete lack of rust and corrosion.

I'm also IN resident... 9k around here better include a reach-around or a perfectly running diesel.

Good stuff here....I really didn't think about going to the SouthWest for a car but .... time to reconsider.
I do like a trip to Vegas now and then....there might be some there for sale.

It is a local truck, garaged (pole barn) body is decent but .... even at 4k, its still got the 5.4 bleh

I'm going to search the southwest some more

Fwiw, More Excursions were sold in CA then any other state ( pretty typical for most vehicles ) and Nor Cal was the hot bed of sales, specifically sacramento because of the right mix of rich suburbanites who live close to ski resorts in Lake Tahoe thinking they needed a giant 4x4.... I still see pristine Excursions in peoples garages around my neighborhood that only get driven to the slopes... one down the street from me that is 1 owner 30k miles... I see the kids waxing it more then I see it driving around. I’ve bought and flipped several, Even shipped one to Dubai.

Thats the one I saw too, I emailed the owner who said someone was coming to look tonight and if that fell through he would contact me. Little body damage in the back but looking at the pics, it looks pretty decent.

Eh. The 5.4 really isn't so bad. You definitely feel the weight of the Ex, and it can't really tow much... but it's still rated for a lot... I just wouldn't count on it.

Thats kind of what I was thinking in the first place, if I could buy the local one at the right price......because my camper is tiny. It's a little 16 footer...however...if I could get a V10, same price and miles, i'd have to look into it.

2010 RPod 176
Dry Weight 2,342 lbs.
GVWR 3,740 lbs.
Hitch Weight 240 lbs.

You'll have no trouble towing that around IN with a 5.4. You'll barely notice it in a v10 or diesel.

Tow it up into the rockies and you'll probably regret the 5.4.

Your math should also include 3 or 4 nights in a hotel at $80 each... puts you at a cost of $900 and at best only 1 day off work (fly out friday after work, get back to IN late on monday; I'd need to sleep all day tuesday after that kind of weekend)
