I just saw somewhere that you can take a 4.6 16 valve and put 32 valve aluminum heads on it from a 2003-2005 Lincoln aviator and make 300hp and near 300 ft lbs of torque? And then would it be a good idea to put a Eaton m112 blower on it I was wondering about doing this and putting it in my 1980 f150 4x4 ranger cause I already have a 4.6 16 valve from a crown Vic that don’t care about. And I would assume I would also probably want to put a better tranny in it too with all this power but I don’t know anything about what one to use. Even if this is more expensive than other options can anyone shed some light on it cause knowledge is power and I like at least just learning more about anything I can. Thanks
Now as for trany what is the 4.6 bell bolt pattern? You may not have a choice on what you can bolt to the 4.6 and if so could that trany bolt to a transfer case for 4x4?
If I was going to do all that work to a 4.6 and drop it into a truck it would not be a 4x4 but a 4x2 on a CV frame swap.
Just my .02

I've read about guys taking the 5.4l and installing it in place of their 4.6l in a Crown Vic. If your truck has a 4.6l already, why not just swap a 4 valve 5.4l into it?

What year is the 4.6 SOHC from ?
There were 4 different configurations of 4.6L blocks and almost a dozen variations within those configurations
They break down as such
Romeo
Windsor
Windsor Aluminium
Teksid Aluminium ( I believe the Teksid is of Romeo configuration)
Cylinder heads between Romeo and Windsor engines will not swap with out some planning.
The 4.6L story is convoluted to say the least. And I I know just enough to be dangerous.
How ever I do know that the strongest factory block is the Teksid AL block and can handle over 1000hp.
The F1AE Romeo block is the only one that uses the Small block Ford bell housing pattern as these engines had the AOD behind them.
I only have experience with and really played with the Romeo AOD 4.6L engines. As they are nice drop in with a carb and a MSD 6 mod ignition controller.
So best to post in the Mod engine forum or hit one of the Mustang forums.
We don't know if the truck has the 4.6 or not all we know is he has a 4.6 from a CV that he does not care about.
I see that as he wants to play and see how much the CV motor with 16 valve heads will take with with 32 valve heads and put a blower on it and then drop into his 4x4 150.
So not knowing what the truck has for a motor or trany will the CV 4.6 be able to bolt to what he has?
Then with 300 hp before the blower will the rest of the drive train hold up?
You know what they say "given enough money & time anything can be done!"

yes that’s exactly what I mean.
Right now I don’t have anything swapped at all. My crown Vic is a 2009 police interceptor and my truck has a 302 with a 4 speed manual(not sure which one)
i belive That a ranger 90 transfer case will bolt up to the crown vic transmission which would be sweet considering that police interceptor tranny are built better I think.
and I was thinking it would be easier to just put heads on my current 4.6 instead of buying a whole parts car.
I don't think you can easily go from SOHC to DOHC. I know that everything about these engines belies the term "modular". If there is a more complicated morass of combinations, sources, build locations, build details, configurations etc, I would be surprised. Good news--you do not need DOHC to make 300+ HP.
This is a comprehensive review of the type with lots of info regarding all the details, and some sources for actual builds like HRM and others using JY motors, swapping to better heads and carbs and making decent power. It's a slog but it is information dense:
