Third and fourth gear missing

Third and fourth gear missing
I just acquired an 88 F Super Duty diesel. The shift gate on the transmission feels like a three speed. There's no opening for third or fourth, but first, second, fifth, and reverse work fine.
What happened ro those gears? I think im going to need them.

My guess is 3-4 shift fork broke? Bent? Synchronizer hub jammed, won't move, thus won't allow the shifter to move into those gates. Your going to have to take the shifter off and look inside. Unlike the light duty 5spd(Mazda), there is no big lid to remove.
Does the truck drive at all? Maybe it's really blown up and not salvageable?

I drove it home with first, second, and fifth. A friend suggested that it might be that the clutch isn't moving as far as it should. The clutch certainly doesn't feel as sure as the one in my 66, but that one isn't hydraulic.

Then likely you'll need to at least get the shifter unbolted and see inside. The pin from the shifter slides three rails to engage the gears. Likely the center one is jammed up for some reason(detent pin, synchro assy, bent fork?). If the transmission works fine, then it isn't blown up.
