AC unit install

Today I fabricated the brackets to hold the Vintage Air Gen II Compac AC unit that I will be using in the ‘50. I have a plastic mock up unit to determine position and necessary brackets. I’m fortunate I have a big hole in the dash at the moment so getting it central was pretty straight forward,

I would definitely think about getting a mock up unit, about $50 but worth it for ease of handling and trying out different mounting positions.

Your pics are a view that very few have seen! Nice to see the fit up of the AC unit. I can't tell from the pics, will the bottom of the unit extend below the position of the original stock dash? Are you saving the stock cowl vent and glove box? Are you going to weld the original dash back in or do you have other plans?
I apologize for all of the questions. I currently have a put together system in Willard, my 49, and have not been happy with the performance. Thanks for starting this thread. I will follow your posts.

Bill, the next job is to build a 3” extension to the bottom of the lower dash to house the AC controls in the center and two switches to the left of the streering wheel. As for the dash, I am going to insert by about 1/2” a carbon fiber dash to house the AC vents at the ends and the dash binacle in the center. Probably going to use this 6 gauge dash -

Thanks for your reply. I had hoped that I could install the same vintage air system without needing to add a dash extension. From your picture it looks like the unit could be located higher than you are locating it, however I want to retain the cowl vent. I have a similar cable driven wiper system which helps but the cowl vent and the top exiting heat/ac vents are constraints on how high the unit can be located. Was it the top exiting vents that determined how high you could locate the unit?

I've seen several guys use this controller, placed where the ashtray is. Nothing hanging under the dash that way...

I’ll take some photos showing the defrost vents in place so you can see how the hoses will route.

Pics of my dash with the current AC. It hangs down a little.

That looks nice. I bought a Gen I for my '53. The kit is still in the boxes. I hope I don't end up regretting not getting the Gen II.

Some additional photos. From the underside of the cowl panel to the defroster outputs is around 6”. This will allow me room to get the hose to the defrost vent. I also positioned the AC unit at the height i did because the two floor vent outputs would be at the height i needs them to blow directly to the floor without additional hoses.

John,
Thanks for the pics. I will have to measure where that places the vintage air unit relative the the bottom edge of the stock dash.

John,
Looking at your pictures again I now realize that the horizontal green tape is the bottom of the original dash. Could you take a measurement from the bottom of the Vintage Air mock up case to the bottom of the dash in your truck, the vertical distance?

I would estimate about 4 1/2” from the bottom of the original dash to the bottom of the AC unit.
