Hey guys. I've got a 1997 F250 HD 4x4 with a 351W and E4OD transmission. I had a Jasper remanufactured transmission installed about 5 years ago. I've only put about 40,000 miles on the transmission. It has been great until the last few months. There are times when I take off down the road and the transmission will constantly shift up and down until the truck reaches about 35 mph. It doesn't do this consistently. Temperature doesn't seem to make a difference either, as it has done this cold and after the truck has reached operating temperature. I had replaced the PCM about a year ago, and just recently replaced the Throttle Position Sensor. The issue is still there, but it only does it every now and then. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
If the speedo is bouncing the speed signal to the PCM is probably bouncing, too. That signal is used to determine when to shift. If it gets bad data it's not going to work as expected.
Sometimes it's debris on the vehicle speed sensor, or a bad sensor, or a damaged wire, or a bad PSOM on the back of the speedometer.
Hey guys. I’m still struggling with the shifting issue with this truck. The issue is now constant, not intermittent.I have double checked wiring and found no obvious issues. I will replace the sensor on the speedometer next. If this doesn’t fix the problem, what should I try next? No OD light flashing and no codes. Many thanks guys
"Remanufactured"...that is the cause of the problem right there. I have learned from experience that rebuilt is a better choice than remanufactured.
Knowing who rebuilt / remanufactured your transmission is better than something from a factory. When I worked at the Chrysler dealer, the Mopar reman units clutches were probably set up in spec but didn’t shift as good as the ones that had been rebuilt in house. We could and did set the clutch packs up at the “tighter” end of the spec to allow for wear.
