Correct, you can't. Once it bends, you cannot bend it back ... if you do, it will break,.
Can this be elaborated on for me? My dealer says they are fixing my tailgate that had two dents in it, one near handle and one on farther toward driver side. I didn't think you could repair it either but apparently they do. They did the damage to it, which explains why they aren't wanting to just give me a new tailgate.
Let's say, hypothetically, that someone stupidly latched their tailgate while unhooking their fifth wheel while distractedly thinking about something annoying them and when said someone pulled forward, the tailgate of course caught the kingpin and did all kinds of not pretty stuff. The passenger side pin that the tailgate locks to was sheared off completely and the driver side one is bent. That side of the tailgate itself now features some ripped out aluminum and the entire tailgate won't close all the way, though it will latch to the bent driver side pin, fortunately. Anywho, would the hypothetical person go to a dealer for repairs, or a body shop?
Were you watching me last weekend? Because I did the exact same thing on my 93 F350.
For extra fun you could buy a replacement camera and harness for your normal tailgate and engineer it onto the 5th-wheel tailgate. Maybe somebody has done this already . . . ?
I have a 5th wheel tailgate for this very possible brain fart type of incident. I did add a factory camera to it and it still works fine with the surround camera system. Because of it's lower location on the V there is a gap on each side of the image where it does not blend in with the side cameras perfectly but that is no big issue. The worst part is that the camera came with something like 12 ft of wire. I wasn't sure if it would be safe to shorten it with a splice so I have to coil it up under the truck.

It really depends on how extensive those "dents" are. Are they mild in that the sheet metal did not get creased? Mild dents can be repaired ... often via "Dent Doctor. If too much for the Doctor and not too deep, then they may be filling them in with body filler. If creased, defnitely ought to be replaced. On the plus side, that repair will most likely not appear on CarFax later.
When my tailgate and tail light were stolen is was $11,200 to replace. I would suggest checking Craigslist and find the same color.
Wow, sounds like they were trying to make some extra profit off that job. Full retail for the parts, plus paint doesn't come anywhere close to that number. I agree that Craigslist is a good source for tailgates. The problem with that is, most come from a base model truck, removed with the bed to install a untility bed. So most dont have the step.

Or they’re stolen. Maybe NGH could’ve found his own tailgate on CL.

No extra profit, I cross referenced everything online and it was about right. I have a Platinum. They had to replace tail lights with BLISS, wiring harnesses, tailgate, step, camera and the things come unpainted so had to paint tricoat metallic and linex it.
Just for an FYI,
I bought a used 2018 tail gate with step off of Craigs list or Facebook Market place, can't remember which now, for 500.00. It was same color as my truck, only issue it had one very small ding which I didn't notice at the time of purchase.

Still surprisingly high. When I had posted that, I just ran some numbers in my head, of things I roughly know the list price of, wholesale or even online pricing would be quite a bit less. LED BLIS lights $2k/pair, bare tailgate around $600(?), step $1400, misc. bits and pieces $600, and paint $400. That had me thinking around $5K, but I spaced the camera, Platinum applique and wiring. I guess those items and a couple hours labor to install makes up the additional $6200?
