fixing a tailgate

hey is it possible to fix a dented tailgate or does it have to be replaced?

anything can be fixed with enough money

naw...seriously you should be able to fix it w/o anyone ever knowing what happened

What kind of damage has it sustained?

well, there is about a circle 9" in diameter that is pushed in, and a dent about 2" in diameter that is creased, and the paint in this 2" section is gone.

I got a dent in my tailgate, and took it to the body shop, and they said that I would need to get a new one, because of the gap between the metal. They would have to peel it back, punch it out, and then re-weld it together, so it wasn't worth it. It was cheaper to get a new tailgate.

well i hope you are ready to re-paint it, lol. You are gonna have to pull it out as much as you can and then use bondo to fill in what you can't get out...mind you Bondo can be stronger than metal when used properly.

I can't remember what it is called but it is a long rod with a slide weight on it...on one end is a handle and the other is threaded.

I believe it is called a slide hammer. Tailgates are a fairly easy repair since they are relatively flat. An in-line sander or block sander will help.
