Warning - Trans. Temp Gauge Install

While changing my oil Saturday morning, I noticed that my transmission (4R100/V10) was leaking fluid...at least enough to put a film of fluid on the pan and surrounding parts. I cleaned it off with a rag and after starting the engine, found that the transmission temperature gauge (Auto Meter) sending unit was leaking. It had been installed into the test port on the right side of the transmission, per recommendations here on the board.

Anyway, I messed with it a little bit, only making the leak worse, so I pulled the unit and replaced it with the original plug. Problem is, the outer copper casing/probe broke loose from the main unit and is now stuck in the test port.

I called AutoMeter and their tech explained that the test port is not a viable location for the sending unit, because the depth of the hole is not sufficient to allow the sending unit to be tightened fully. As a result of my tightening it, the unit cracked inside the transmission and caused it to leak.

I'm now strategizing on a method to remove the copper casing without damaging the threads of the test port. I believe the casing expanded upon bottoming out in the test port, and is now too large to be simply pulled out of the port.

I know that at least a few folks here on the board have used this port to locate the sending unit, and I wanted to let you know of this potential problem.

If anyone has had a similar problem and/or has an idea about removing the broken piece, please respond.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I know there are several different lenght probes. I have installed 3 temp gauage set ups on 4R100's for friends and family with no problems. Summitt Racings sells the short probes. Sorry, don't know the part number.

Getting the old piece out could be a problem. I would try a tapered E-Z out with counter clockwise twist first. Just be real gentle because the soft brass housing will expand easy. If you mess us the hole you could re-tap and go to a larger plug. Looks like thers is enough metal in the area to do this.

Good Luck !

Thanks GAV-10. I looked at Summit's web site, but couldn't see anything that looked right. I do have a solution though, if I can get the old housing out. I've got a fitting that will allow for a more shallow installation.

For what it's worth, the tech at Auto Meter advised that the test port is not a good location, in that the fluid that gets to the port is not circulated and may give false temp readings, either too hot or too cool. I'm satisfied that the temp reading from that port is still relative, even if not exact.

Did they say where it should go?

The tech suggested that tapping the pan was the only way to go.

New Guy

Hi
Just purchased a 1997 F250 HD with 7.5 auto Super Cab SB towing package 410 limited slip. 60,000 miles. I bought the Auto Meter A pillar with 2 gauge pods and an Autometer Trans temp and Oil temp gauges.
I was thinking of installing a tee in the out line from the trans for the temp sender. I may install a Shift kit but not sure yet.
I will be towing my 67 Mustang GT (428CJ) to drag race events in CA. I'm 15 minutes away from Sears Point.
I'm selling my 72 F250 Camper Special 360 FE power. I have Played around with a lot of FE stuff, this is my first 385 series.
Suggestions greatly appreciated.
