I'm looking to change out my stock heads for something that will yield more performance when towing my trailer in the mountains. I realize the 3.55 gearing reduces the speeds on grades, but I feel quite certain there are aftermarket heads that will help to power through extended hill climbing. Your thoughts, Please.
it depends on your budget. edelbrock, world castings are all good heads and fairly cheap. the roush heads are cheaper but are cast iron. the edelbrocks are aluminum of course and probably would be your best choice for the money. you may poke around the mustang forums there are plenty of guys selling there edelbrock heads for cheap. not because there broke but because they want more juice hehe. or ebay would be another place to look
gacknar, true afr are great heads but are more suited for someone runing more then 350 hp. to much flow on a motor that not built for it will hinder performance.
I would go with the AFR 165,the AFR 185 has 2.02 valves then you would have to notch out the pistons. As far as not getting them for too much power, why bother getting aftermarket heads. The flow results aren't that different.
AFR 165 heads would not flow too much, nor 185. I belive the 185 heads have a 1.92 intake valve. It's the AFR 205 and 225 that would be too much for any stock, to mild 5.0. They have the 2.02 valves.
nope, I stand corrected, the 185's do have a 2.02 valve.
If you need the world’s finest street/strip small block Ford head, check out AFR’s all new 185cc intake port emissions legal (CARB EO #250-3) cylinder heads. With 2.020 intake valves, 1.600” exhaust valves, combustion chamber volumes of 58cc or 61cc, and 69cc exhaust ports, AFR’s new 185cc Ford head is designed for 302-351 cid engines operating from 1500 rpm to 6500 rpm. A 3/4” thick head deck makes the AFR head ideal for nitrous or blower applications. Will not accept rail rocker arms. Hardened pushrods required with heads #1420 and #1422. High flow 2.020 valves might require aftermarket pistons notched for valve clearance. Note: 1986 5.0L must have pistons notched for clearance.
