Larry’s 1979 crew cab

Had her for years. My first truck. Parked her about a year ago because of the trans. Been one thing after another since. This might be a build thread but if anything will probably be a questions thread. I’ve still got lots of learnin to do. I get help from friends and other guys I know “in the know”. Some stuff takes me way to long and I’m HORRIBLE about having to many irons in the fire but here goes.

Stuff completed last summer and this winter include:
Tow hooks
New painted Radiator support
New shocks all the way
New water pump paint
timing chain cover paint
New timing chain
oil pan paint
New grill
New grill insert
New Turn signal
Battery tray painted
Ammo can installed
Diff cover paint, gasket
Fire extinguisher
Headlight sockets
Rs valve cover paint and gasket
New oil pump
Temp gauge installed
Rear main seal
Trans rebuild
trans mount
trans crossmember rebuild
Exhaust wrap
Lug nuts
Front brake calipers
Rear wheel seal
Wheel cylinders
Choke cable
Parking brake cable
Headlight bucket

Not in any order and a bunch of stuff got left out. Many many more upgrades and fixes that I just didn’t ever write down and can’t remember. Engine runs GOOD. Idles, starts, shuts off and runs great. Need to get it back on the road to see how much more power she’s really got. New WP, chain cover, and oil pan painted ford blue. Replaced a bunch of wiring and hoses over the year. Nv4500 was rebuilt at a local shop. Still need to really break it in. Needed a gear, synchros, and a mainshaft. Among other stuff. Timing advanced with the new chain. All that’s keepin me from driving it are the rear needing bled since I just replaced the wheel cylinders. Right rear was FULL of grease so I bet I do a brake job in a weekend or so. Trying to get her back on the road by March.
Still a bunch of stuff I’m doing after that.

Thanks guys. Truck was repainted I think before me. Currently on its second hood, 4th and 5th fenders, 3 grill, second radiator support, and one bent bumper

stilln needs a drivers fender and a better hood. Found a bunch of bondo in this one. Fenders and hood will be painted in the spring. Notice I didn’t say what year

I’ve got most of the crew cab specific stuff figured out for now. Most of my questions will be to do with pretty much everything else. I was really lucky that my backseat, rear headliner, and rear door panels are in great condition.

Me front panels aren’t that nice. Plan is to use some diamond plate to make new ones front and back one day. Lots of other stuff to do though!

nexf things will be finishing my back up camera install, gas gauge fixing, and getting my second oil pressure gauge and voltmeter hooked up under the dash. Trans tunnel also needs some fabbing for the shift tower comin through the floor.

One thing I did do that’s not listed is raised the trans up about 8 inches. The po did the nv4500 swap even though I’ve reworked the clutch setup, reworked the crossmember, and had it rebuilt. Mounted the rear end waaaay to low. Had my valve covers back to the firewall and the fan pointed upwards. Ridiculous. New motor mounts and rear rubber mount needed. Remade the trans crossmember (now removalable) so it would hold the mount about 4 inches higher and the new rubber mount did the rest. Flattened the engine out, got great driveline angles, and consequently brought the whole shift tower through the floor. So I’m gonna have to make something for it.

Diamond plate ideas, 1st time you drag an elbow/knuckle across it, you might re-think it.

It will definitely take some time with a file and some sand paper!! Think I’m gonna make a box around the handle like the top pic. Probably screw the main piece on around the edges like shown, then screw the “box” over the handle. I’ve got a vice and anvil but like a lot of stuff will probably have to do this at work. Flat fasteners for the factory black panels on the rears would make mounting something on there flat a lot easier. I’d like to just take the two piece black plates out and just screw the diamond plate in using those holes. But I don’t know how well the window crank will want to work mounted into aluminum. Maybe I could reinforce before hand.
