Update from raplacing my timing chain, which then turned into broken dizzy, which turned into siezed oil pump. So, I decided to pull the motor, replace the intake as well, and do a quick once over paint job.
I had the timing cover and new water pump on, then I realized I made a huge mistake and forgot the timing chain bolt! I didn't think about it because it has an electric fuel pump. So, this picture, the new paint is scraped off because I had to scrape off the brand new gasket
Here it is with the new performer intake. I need to clean up a little bit where the RV squeezed out the front of the intake, kinda looks junky but not too bad for a first timer.
Here is my new DUI dizzy! I was gonna get a blue cap and coil, but I thought it may look better black to match the accessory brackets, and the black 1" carb spacer thats not on there yet.
I hope to get the rest of it together tonight/tomorrow, and get it cranking soon. It's my daily driver, so I gotta get it outta there.
Here it is all done! Just need to do some fine tuning, next sunday it's gonna get dyno tuned at a buddies hot rod shop. Turned out much better than I expected, no surprises which was good
LOVE that DUI dizzy, that, with the new timing chain, idles VERY steady, I can bring the idle down to 400 rpms and it will hold a nice smooth idle.
That looks good. Isn't it a great feeling to labor over something, to have it look great and work perfect?
What does it cost roughly to dyno tune an engine? What is done differently from using a timing gun and a vacuum gauge? Sorry for all the questions, I did not know this could be done.
first run was 189 at the wheels (with 31" tires). Found it was dumping too much fuel. Changed out the metering rods, bumped the timing up a little, and ended up with 205 rwhp and 260 tq on the second run. I'm not sure what the HP/TQ numbers are at the crank, but he said you loose about 20% through the driveline with an automatic tranny, and more with bigger tires (31's) but wasn't sure how much. Anyone know?
I figured if you lose 20% through the driveline, then you could take RWHP and divide it by .80, to get BHP the the same for TQ...right?
If thats true, than I would have a BHP of 256 and TQ is 325, at the crank.
WOT was calibrated fine after that, but I was having some stumbling/hesitation issues that he said he would work on for me, but it was getting late, I was 90 miles from home, and he was doing this on his day off....for free. SO, I told him not to worry about it and I would look into it later.
So yesterday, I pulled the carb off and found that the PO had jetted the carb rich (he told me for towing but didn't remember the jet size). It had .098 primaries and .101 secondaries. I switched the .098 to the secondaries and put .095 for the primaries. After that I changed the accelerator pump linkage to the bottom hole from the middle hole for a bigger squirt, bumped the timing up a little and presto, good to go! Nice and smooth all the way through.
I have been very happy with this build, and I love the DUI dizzy, noticably smoother idle and easy startup (although I'm sure a new timing chain and intake helped that )
I may take it back to his shop in a few weeks when I'm on that side of town, see if it's much different now.
Holy crap...what size carb are you running? Those jets are ridiculously huge. I've got a hand full of carbed rigs around my place rangining anywhere from 150rwhp-400rwhp and all of them have a Holley 650cfm carb and none of the jets are any bigger than 73's.
Okay, I was wondering. I tried to look for a 1406 on their site, but couldn't find anything, but maybe it was a snake...
Anyway, I think I may be back to square one. It drove fine alllll day long around town. On the way home on the highway I live off of, I was gettin on it pretty good, trying to find a problem with it so to speak. I found I still have some hesitation if it's at about 3000 and I step on it. Anything below 2500 I can punch it and it's fine.
Also, when I got home, down our private road, the low stumbling problem arose agian. I'm starting to wonder if it is trash, and when I started romping on it, it pushed that trash through? The timing is still the same (set at 12 btdc).
