I haven't looked at ours to see the original design, but I'm having a hard time believing making the hole to the air filter larger is going to lower the air pressure in front of our Excursions.

I doubt anybody would suggest a larger hole is going to lower the air pressure in front of the excursion, at least in a measurable or significant way.....unless you made the hole the size of the entire grill. Lmao

That hole doesn’t even line up with the intake, it’s separated by a wall of plastic. I believe your theory but not in this application. It’s not like that tiny hole is the only place air comes in, there’s gaps all over around the intake tube. Beating a dead horse at this point...moving on.

the holes is purposely not aligned to keep down water intrusion, The space you refer to acts as a plenum chamber which is used to eliminate pulsations and smooth out the airflow.

Bottom line is the air path path has been carefully and purposefuly engineered to maximize performance and economy during a specific operating condition, ( likely highway operating speeds at 72* F )
You can certainly change those parameters but randomly cutting holes or altering the air path with no regards to physics is not likely to net any improvements to a specic parameter, the most likely outcome will be increased foreign debris entry and a loss of highway fuel economy since that is what it is currently optimized for.

If the hole is the same size and the plenum chamber is the same on the 7.3, 6.0, 5.4 and 6.8 then I guess we can safely say it’s a generic design and not specific to any motor. With all the changes we make to tuning, injectors, turbos etc I think we can safely say that enlarging the hole won’t hurt anything even on a stock truck...(who stays completely stock)? I had to go to an S&B stage 2 intake with a bunch of 1/2” holes drilled in the intake cover to keep my turbo from sucking the air filter maintenance minder from sucking flat after hard acceleration. The stock Donaldson filter was definitely not allowing enough flow either. After seeing the rest of the ignorant designs on my 6.0 I don’t trust any of it. Let’s recirculate exhaust gas and crank case vapors into the intake, sounds brilliant! Don’t get me started on the lack of head bolts, EGR cooler and the crappy oil cooler design.
