yep. many people do the Zoodad mod. I did it to my '00 X, '02 X, and '06 PSD F-250. sorta CAI ish

someone suggested I might want a screen over that big hole. went by Home Depot and grabbed some gutter screen for $2.42. Cut it to fit, put some notches to clear, sprayed black with rattle can paint...and it snapped right in. The side that snaps onto your gutter fits perfectly next to the radiator. Then 4 screws to prevent it from falling out.
works great. and essentially no fabrication. The screen looks like like it's plugged up due to the light. All the holes are clear.

Zero issues on any of those 3 rigs. I don't know if it helps or not...but it doesn't hurt lol. And is essentially free
Did the Zoodad mod on my 05 V10 Ex about 9 months ago along with a Volant air intake. No issues, and I've driven in numerous heavy rains at highway speeds. Runs great with a little more intake noise on acceleration. I didn't put any screening in place over the Zoodad hole but the Volant filter has a pre-filter cover over it (not shown in the third picture as I didn't have it installed over the filter yet)
The reason the hole is that size is because your intake system takes advantage of the positive pressure created in front of the grill and uses the pressure difrential to speed up the air going into the intake, it creates a “ram jet” effect, making the hole larger decreases the air speed negating the effectes of the pressure differential.
in other words it is designed that way, drilling a larger hole does more harm then good for the majority of your driving time.... i.e. at highway speeds.

yup, the same invisible voodoo magic that allows Airplanes to fly and air conditioners to cool your home is at work supplying enough air to your motor through that tiny hole
( hint: read up on Bernoulli's principle, it’s basic fluid dynamics )
