I love my 4.6l.. I HATE the oil filter location. Like what buffoon decided that a good place for the oil filter requires to be double jointed to access? lol No but seriously the front of the engine, under the power steering pump and right atop the cross-member is an absolutely horrible spot!
Has anyone here successfully used a filter relocation kit to help make this better?
In the older 4wd trucks it was behind the bumper. Very easy to get to. But what happens if a hose breaks?
In CA you'll get on the news for contaminating the environment, then you can make it better by recycling the truck.
But seriously, you'd empty the crankcase in less than a minute depending on engine speed and then you'd have a big problem. No bigger than same failure on an oil cooler line though.
Right behind the bumper would concern me that a bent bumper means the vehicle becomes undriveable though.
Yeah I don't like the thought of rubber hoses but they can always be swapped out with steel line. I just know that I have to do something.. hell you can't even get a filter wrench up in there.
if you can hardly get the filter off, then how are you going to install a new HEAD and route lines ? Its only once every 5000 miles to remove the filter.. Not that big of a deal.
I don't know about the 4.6, but on my 5.0 I use a wrench like the Lisle 63600. it grips the Motorcraft filter ribs just fine.
That along with a Craftsman stubby 3/8 drive flex ratchet works fine. The hardest part was getting the OEM filter off. musta been put on by a 600 lb gorilla.
