I have a 00' 6.8 F-250 owners manual reads 5-30 , my brother in law has a 01 6.8 in a Winnebago oil cap reads 5-20..
what's the difference?
Same engine..?
I had two 2000 V10s and one was 5-20 and the other was 5-30, I ran Mobile 1 5-30 in both for the whole time I had them. One from new (my work truck) used a quart every 2K and the other my pulling truck used a quart every 4.5K from new, it never changed for the 100K + miles I had them.
My has 160 k +/- , I was using 5-20 m1 because my 99' f150 5.4 required that grade. Thought all Ford modular engines ran same grade.
My 6.8 was using a quart every 1-1.5 k , I just started using 5-30 m1.. we'll see
thanks
I ran 5w20 in my 2001 V10 when it was almost brand new, once. ONCE. I heard the timing chains whirring, and drained that out and put 5W30 in it, and it was nice and quiet again.
Nothing changed mechanically when they went to 5W20, so I kept with the 5W30.
When I purchased my 99 V10 with 125k miles my local dealer recommended 5w20, found my consumption was a couple quarts in 5k using Motorcraft FLS-820 and Motorcraft 5W20 synthetic blend, switching to Motorcraft 5W30 Synthetic Blend has resulted in about 1 quart per 5k.
Sounds like the 5w-30 is the way to go. How many of you guys run syn vs. dino? I plan on Supertech 5w-30 syn. I have run the ST 15w-40 in my 7.3 for 2 years now and my UOAs are stellar.
I always ran straight dino Castrol GTX 5w30 in my '01 - it had a lot of hot idling and pulling, but only 60K miles on it when I sold it a month ago. Runs like a champ.
The one thing I had to explain to the new owner was, if the oil level is between the two dots on stick, don't add any. He was worried because it was "burning oil". He kept adding oil up to the top dot. For the 2-valve, it's 6 quarts, and that's IT. If you keep trying to fill to the top dot, it will burn off the excess.
Change the oil, put in exactly 6 quarts. Run it, shut it off, and check it in the morning. Whatever level it's at is IT. I suspect this is where some people's problems come from when it comes to "burning oil".

This is really insightful and I would agree. I'll keep this in mind when shopping for one....as soon as my 7.3 sells dangit LOL

my experience was very very similar.
But I found the benefit to high consumption is that when you add a quart every 1,000 miles; the engine internals stay cleaner and you can run longer oil change intervals. Not kidding at all. I have pics right now of my engine- I averaged 10,000+ miles per oil/filter change. It’s virgin-clean inside.
On a previous oil change, I ran 5W30. The Blackstone report for that run came back great and suggested a 6k oil change interval. During that run on 5W30 I went through 1.5qts in 5k miles and had valve clatter on startup for far too long until the thicker oil worked it's way too the top end. On the following oil change I switched to Amsoil 0W-20. The valve clatter on startup now lasts for only half a second and overall the engine is much quieter, except for a bit of timing chain whirring. During this 6k oil change interval I only used 1qt. The sample will be going out to Blackstone today and I'll post back what that says.
I run 5w-20 on the 2V and also both 1996 Broncos. I run 0w-20 on the little Honda cars. I will be highly interested in the Blackstone report of running 0w-20 in the V10. It would be nice to go down to just one oil for everything.
I expect to just tow 10-11k lbs including the horses. The only oil I fear is 15w-40. Way too thick and a power-robber. In my opinion.
