head gaskets

I am putting the heads back on my motor, and, I tried like hell to get the surfaces as smooth as I could. but, there is still some, not much, roughness on the heads and block, from the old gasket. it is very minimal, but, will it be a problem or do I need to break out the wire wheel and go to town.

It would be worth it to go ahead and bust out the wire wheel. I assume that you have cast iron parts, and if so, do go town. Be gentle, but not afraid. It took me about an hour to clean my intake and head when I had to change the end seals.

DO NOT WIRE WHEEL A BLOCK WITH PISTONS IN IT WITHOUT PRECAUTIONS TO COVER THE BORES. Muchtomydelight, I don't think you caught this was a Cyl head to Block seal.. Among the best ways to scour your cyl. walls and implode an oil pump is a few of those bristles and some grit and iron in the top of your engine. Remember the pump will see them before the filter will. Carefully use a gasket scraper and steel wool if you are concerned, but I would not even worry about it unless I was using Stainless Steel shim gaskets. With the .038" fel-pro, get it pretty clean, and torque away. The biggest problem with head gaskets is improper torquing.

On the intake, be careful, but a WW will be OK, on exhaust, Go To Town!
