I've been working on the 4wd on my dad's 03 f250. It won't engage when you turn the switch. I've checked the relays under the hood (swapped them into the blower motor socket) and verified that they're good. However, when I turn the dash switch, nothing happens. Relays don't click, motor doesn't turn, and the 4x4 light on the instrument panel doesn't come on. We replaced the motor, thinking it might be weak, or the position sensor in it might be bad, but still nothing. All the forums I've read so far point to the auto hubs, but this truck has the manual locking hubs. Besides, the hubs shouldn't affect whether or not the TC motor engages, should they? and if the TC motor engages, it should turn on the 4wd light? The only other thing I can figure is the control module behind the glove box. Can anyone verify that, or give any insight? Maybe a test procedure for the control module?
Just for the record, when I had the motor off, I was easily able to shift it into 4wd with a wrench.
Thanks!
Oh, and I almost forgot. This morning when Dad went to leave for work (this was before I put the new motor in), he turned the key on and heard the motor run, and it put it back into 2wd, but the switch was in 4wd!
I honestly don't have much knowledge in the way of these trucks, as I've only had mine for a few months. But, I ran into some issues with mine after I swapped my front brakes and right caliper. My issue was quite the opposite however, it wouldn't disengage from 4 low.
I went through all of my relays and fuses as well. I checked all of my electrical connections, but mine would never disengage from 4 low.
This might sound stupid to the more experienced guys, but have you tried moving in/out of 4 wheel when in neutral? This helped my situation. I left my truck running in neutral and was able to swap from 2 w to 4 high and 4 low.
I think there are some threads about 4wd not working and the problem ended up being the actual switch in the cab, so that could be one of many possibilities
I'm following this thread as well. I have the same issue and set up (2002 f350 7.3l lariat with warn manual hubs). I changed the relays, checked the fuses, had transfer case shift motor replaced last year( confirmed motor good by pulling motor off and unpluged put 12V from outside source and motor moved reinstalled motor), I have been working a lot of overtime and didn't have time to work on it. so I gave it to the dealership. they did their tests and changed the PVH, wasn't making proper vacuum, also changed the GEM for 4x4 behind dash. still nothing. they told me its mechanical in the Transfer Case and that everything is working electrically, although I still have no dash light or movement at the shift motor. Is there a troubleshoot menu/ flow chart to follow. I have a golf cart and the service manual has a troubleshoot menu that directs you...for example - do this ??? and look for this response???, if yes, do this ???, if no, do this??? Does any one here have something like this from Ford? or does Ford have this...
Thx as always for the help.
