I have a 2002 f350. I used my 4wd low last week. after I was done I got out unlocked the hubs (warn manual, no vacuum). I then switched to 4x4 high and drove forward. The 4x4 light has been on since. Lucky I have free wheeling front but I did test the hubs again by locking them and it went right into 4wd high, so its enguaged and turning. So today I cleaned the connecter to the motor on the xfer housing, checked all the fuses , looked at the switchbox contacts next to the brake fluid res. They looked good as well. ( I think that is the one). I also had my batteries out to replace the headlamps at the same time. So I checked everyrthing while disconnected. But after all that the 4x4 is still on. So I plan on going over to a friends shop and working on it in the heated garage, what else and how can I check it out to see whats the problem? I wonder if it is the motor (450 bucks I hear) on the xfer. Is there a way I can check the connections? I do have a multimeter but only used it a few times. Any help would be great. Thanks Jeff
You can pull the motor and shift it manually. While the motor is out you can operate the switch to see if the motor is working or not. I don't think the motor costs that much on Rockauto.com it is about $125.
I was thinking of picking up a motor to have on hand or replace anyways since the truck is 9 years old and maybe the motor will go soon anyay. But how can i check the connection to to motor with the meter? If and if I remove the motor How does it shift manually to 2wd so i can do it manually to get it out of 4wd high? thanks Jeff
