timing question

I was just wondering what the best timing setting would be (best fuel milage/power without causing damage) for my balanced 460 9:1 compresion, RV cam, 750 electric choke edlbrock, wiend stealth aluminum intake. Your pinions and suggestions are much apreciated!

This has always worked for me. I just advance the timing a couple degrees at a time till it pings, then back it off again. Anyone else do this?

I usually use a vacuum gauge to set mine. That way the timing is right for whatever elevation you are at. I live @ 7200 ft.

Me too!

It seems to be the universal timing advance for the 460.

I was running the cheap stuff... last fill i put 89 in to see if it makes a diff.. still waiting to see.

I was running 87 octane until I did my Buildup. It ran ok,but on 91 octane I was getting better performance and fuel mileage.
Now I run only 91 in my truck. Gets spendy sometimes but I feel it is worth the extra mileage and power.

Before I had my distributor recurved I would get pinging under load @ 12* unless I ran mid-grade fuel. After the recurve I could run anything without problem.

The guy who did the work said rebuilts are usually mismatched because of the variety of applications and seldom are the springs and weights correct. I provided him with engine rpm's, vacuum readings, speeds, fuel information along with a bunch of other stuff and he set the timing curve to match my needs.

We did a 2,600 mile trip to Colorado towing our 5th wheel this last July running altitudes from ~600 to over 10,000' and used octanes from 85 to 91 with no problems, no pinging and lots of power.

A performance matched recurve is well worth the time and money. I've got a good ignition service I can recommend in the Mpls-St Paul area if anyone is interested.

I actually run mine at 17 initial. Allot I know, but I run top grade fuel and my dizzy's curved for my motor. What I recomend to most folks asking this question is to put it at 10btdc, see if it pings under load with the fuel you run...then try another two degrees...if thats still good then another two, etc.

re-curve info needed

Hey ClydeSDale, I would like the info on the shop that did your recurve. Mine was pinging bad at 11.Mine also goes to like 24 degrees at like 1500rpm, seems too much to me, anyway I would like to get it recurved. Thanks!

I run 87 octane @ 12 degrees. No problems. I also do run the vacuum advance on ported vacuum, not manifold vacuum.

I'm running about 6 right now on the non-emissions port of my edelbrock.. i am not sure what the difference would be with the emissions port (specified in the documentation).. but i get some pinging still under load with mid-grade (89 oct) gas. kinda annoying.
