best degreaser, though it's dangerous, is gas. I've also used laquer thinner with cheap chip brushes. Either of those are a lot cheaper than tons and tons of safer things to remove gritty, oil, grease. But, if you don't mind spending extra money and want to be safe, purple power or red power (think red requires dealers license) are pretty good. Simple Green is pretty good. Wallyworld has these big cheapo jugs of "Fabuloso" if I recall, that works ok. If you find spray cans of brake cleaner on sale, those work really good too, but again a lot more cash. Gas or laquer thinner with cheap paint brushes can work wonders under $5. A gallon of gas for $2 and a couple dollar store paint brushes can clean really good but you have to get down on it and get dirty, and some areas might require extra work with putty knife or flathead to scrape of thick stuff.
I try and remove as much thicker stuff as possible with scraping and get as much as possible off before I resort to cleaning solutions, because it can add up if you want to be safe and environmentally correct, it takes lots of safer products to accomplish what $2 in gas can do.
