5.8 (351w) exhaust manifold studs

hello, my 97 F250 has an exhaust tick. I am attempting to remedy this by snuggling up the loose studs/bolts. All are good except for the two inner threaded studs which the oil dipstick tube and some other bracket mounts to.

the problem: while these studs spin freely in the block, the oil dipstick tube nut is kinda seized to the other integral stud nut.

I have two questions:

1. What size is the inner stud nut? It appears to be smaller than the other 14mm nuts. Like 12 or 13?

2. When I attempt to loosen the nut on the oil dip tube, it spins the whole stud and moves the dipstick bracket! (Kind of like when you double up nuts to install or remove threaded rod). How can I separate these ?

thanks in advance.

That bolt is broken and probably rusted pretty bad so no need to be nice to it just cut it off any way you can. That of course means you now need to completely remove the manifold and pull out whatever remains of that bolt so a new one can be installed.

I don’t think it’s broken. But if it is, what’s the best way for a shade tree to remove it?

These bolts often "rust off" but usually leave a stem sticking out of the head and I have never seen one that was actually seized in the head so as long as you can get a vise grip on it it should back right out.

I would cut the nut holding the dip stick tube and other accessories and then see of the stud comes out in one piece. But like Conanski says it may already be broken. I actually just had the same thing happen the other day and the stud came out. Dorman makes a replacement manifold bolt/stud kit.

I think they are 1/2 or 9/16. Don't think they are metric since the threads I believe are 3/8.

ooo, having just done this yesterday, the ones on my 351 were 14mm for both the inner and outer.
BUT that one had already been replaced at some point, as the cracked manifold I pulled off
had China clearly cast into the back.

fwiw,

Have you had good luck with those? I am nervous about the fastener quality and haven't addressed this noise completely yet. Also, with red Loctite, what kind of torque should I not exceed when installing these or tightening them. I am afraid by the way one of mine felt, I will be needing a heli-coil.

Also, my inner stud nuts are 1/2 or smaller so PO might've stripped them. Outsides are definitely 14 or 9/16. Why would you use loctitie? I thought this repair called for anti-seize?

The Dorman bolt kit has worked fine for me and on my previous 95 and they were on there for several years.

As I expected, the stud was not broken and came freely out the block.

it was in fact seized to the dip stick tube nut. I now have a new problem—as I was fighting with it the dipstick drive came straight out of the block!

I do not know how or where to reinsert it! Does it go under or over or through the exhaust manifold?

can someone help?

The dipstick just slips into a hole in the lower skirt of the block near the oilpan, there is a grommet on it though. Straighten out your bracket and it should go right back in.

Does the tube slide through the exhaust manifold? If so, between which cylinders? I have no idea where this hole is and can't see a thing.
