OK I'm sure that there are tons of threads on this and I did try searching but here is my current issue. Last spring I had new injectors and injector cups installed and while they were at if did the EBPV delete. Now that it is winter, my Excursion seems to hate the cold even more and quite a bit louder. It takes quite a while to warm up but while doing so the exhaust coming out of the pipe is pretty heavy and stinky. I don't want to smoke out the whole neighborhood.
I've replaced the EOT sensor and seemed to have helped with the smoking but am wondering does the coolant sensor need to be changed as well? Any other potential things to look at?
Did you also replace glow plugs and UVC harnesses when you did the other work? If glow plugs are not all working that could cause prolonged stinky smoke. I suspect your Glow plug relay is working or you probably wouldn't get started at all. Could check and make sure it's transferring full voltage. If contacts are old and pitted may not be getting full power to the glow plugs.
Hate to say it but if I lived in Montana I probably would have kept the EBPV. Don't need it in Ga but as cold as it gets up there and as many days it might be worth it to have it. It is going to take it longer to heat up for sure.

I replaced the GP's a couple of years ago. And one of the harnesses was replaced too since it was throwing a code.

Did you use Motocraft / Beru plugs or someone else's. Break out a meter and check them. All should read right at an Ohm or less. I will have to look up the exact specs.
With glow plug relay energized you should see the same voltage to ground that you see from the battery positive to ground. If it's lower by a volt or 2 you may need a new Glow plug relay. They do go bad.
Don't read Battery to ground then close the relay and measure relay to ground or you will see lower voltage, the glow plugs will drop batt voltage a volt or more when energized. Measure the battery to ground with the relay energized and the large post closest to the back of the relay to ground.
In cold weather 1 bad glow plug or connection to it will smoke out a small parking lot. When started take off immediately and if the smoke diminishes within a block or so it's probably just that. As mentioned measure the glow plugs resistance(s) from the outside of the valve cover connections as that is the easiest. Usually 1 ohm or less. Of course it could be a bad GPR also.
I have the same problem - worse with elevation. I plan to pull the valve covers soon and investigate as well as do a compression check. The smoke is NASTY on cold days. I don't know how people who drive gassers without catalytic converters do it... stinks like ****!

The coolant sensor is only for the gauge, the computer doesn't see it so it won't alter anything about the way it runs.
Living where it's so cold so often I'da kept the EBPV.
Let's see - you're in Billings, you did EBPV delete, no plug in engine heater and you wonder why she smokes? Probably don't add anti gel & cetane boost to fuel?
I like to start it, wait till to fast idle kicks in, then put it in gear and drive babying it till the temp gauge is rising. It will blow less smoke and warm up faster going down the road.
Down to zero I give glow plugs 2 minutes, another 2 minutes on fast idle - within half a mile no smoke. But I still have EBPV and in winter treat each tank with anti gel & cetane boost! Usually up to operating range in 5 miles.
