Anyone put in a new head unit that can take multiple backup cameras. I want to put one on the back of the ex obviously, but also hook one up to the back of the travel trailer. Anyone do this? What head unit and camera?
Alot of the newer headunits have two camera inputs. The thing ive found out when ive been looking is the ease of turning on the second input, the main input comes on when switching into reverse. If i remember correctly alot of the nicer Kenwood units have a button on the face which makes it simple to access the camera inputs without having to go into the menu of the unit. I dont have any specific model numbers to point you towards off the top of my head. If you have the factory rear seat entertainment it wont be a simple plug and play install to keep that working properly but there are several right ups and videos on what to do.
I have the eBay unit that came recommended here, it has a second video input. I want a camera on the grille facing down so I can see how close I am to crushing small cars when parking, and to pick a line amongst trail obstructions when offroading. The plan is to mount a push-on/push-off switch on the shifter.
Of course, like anything in my life, I'm waiting for nine things to line up to get it done - now that I have the head unit and camera, got the '05 grille for Christmas, and a welding helmet to replace my busted one, I only need to get the new WIY bumper to fit the grille, choose a header panel, pick up gas and wire for the welder, find time time and good weather to do it, blah, blah, blah...
I just installed a Pioneer AVH-2440NEX, and it does the same. I hooked up the rear camera so it has power with ignition, then the radio flips to it when i go in reverse and when I hold down a button on the front of the radio. It has another video input that I was planning for the front, to eliminate crushing small cars as well.
I had one heck of a time finding the reverse wire to tap for the reverse sense. It is a black/pink wire, it is accessible under the driver's sill, it comes in from underneath the body, right next to the driver seat. I couldn't find it in the kick panel with out cutting all the wrap off, it is easily accessible next to the seat.
The Kenwood DDX6705S has dual camera inputs and a button to toggle between them. I am actually going to have this unit installed with the backup camera hopefully today or later this week.
Ended up getting the pioneer 2440nex, they sent me the 2550 though. For those that didn't buy the adapter and spliced in the wiring harness, did you put the switched power on the head unit with just the pwr/acc relay wire or did you splice in the power during start wire too? It's annoying for it to reboot Everytime I start the engine.
