Something like P.I.E.'s FRD04-AUX will plug into the semi-proprietary CAN bus port on the back of the deck. You can then run RCA (left/right) cables into the adapter and run just about any audio device into the head unit.
That port, incidentally, is primarily used in the Excursions & Explorers for the rear seat entertainment.
They, however, probably do not have the cheaper price for it. I would start with a Google search for "P.I.E." and/or "FRD04-AUX". And dig through the results.
Figured I would revisit this really quick, and drop in two additional notes.
I have done this on my last two Super Duties, and was extremely happy with the result. With an iPod & the P.I.E. adapter, I was able to listen to my MP3s while on the road.
I have played around with swapping between high bit rate MP3s (256-320 Kbps) and the actual source CDs, and the sound quality is indistinguishable between the two. Something that I definitely could not say about any of the adapters that play your iPod via a low powered RF transmitter.
Secondly, per P.I.E.'s web site:
PIE will NOT honor or support any warranty claims for purchases made on eBAY. Regardless of what they might tell you in the auction, PIE does not approve of ANY other eBAY seller of our products.
PIE has always sold its products through authorized accounts only. We do this so that you, the consumer, are comforted knowing, you have the most up to date product and will get the best service possible.
Not a huge deal, I suppose, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
i just sold my pie adaptor on the classified section here..... its too bad you didnt see it there or you could have had it too. they are a good product and very easy to install. i was using it on my satellite radio to i didnt have to use the FM modulator function.... the PIE will get a direct hookup, providing a much cleaner sound.
Well, I finally got time to put the P.I.E. Input in. I got the thing off ebay...$60. I put several pictures in my gallery of the install. This wasn't hard to do at all. It took me awhile just because I wanted to do it right the first time. The thing is definately better than fm x-mitter. Clear as a bell. Tell me what ya think!
