I have a 2001 Ford F350 7.3 ltr 2 years ago i took it to a reputable Transmission shop and had to have it re-built ...i have only put maybe 15k -20k on the trans
i was driving home the other day hit the brake to pull onto my street .when i hit the gas pedal it just revved up total slippage had no problems what so ever on the drive ,so i ran threw the gears and nothing..turned off truck for a couple minutes fired it up and it took off i had to stop again to back it in the driveway when i went to take of again same thing happened just slipped...again i turned truck off ,fired it back up and put it in reverse and again in moved so i parked it. it was kinda late so i waited until morning to take a look at it..in morning i looked at Fluid level and it was nice and pink and at proper level i do believe its parked on a hill, but have not had any leaks before or now ...just wondering if anyone has a clue to what might be going on...no CEL i have a handheld code reader and it did not come up with anything.
It's possible the filter has fallen down. What you described is the fluid sloshing away from the pick up and that is causing the slippage or no drive. You stopped, let the fluid gather back at the pan and then it worked again until you stopped again.
If the fluid level is correct then you need to drop the pan and check the filter. JMO
I don't think having transmission rebuilt by local shop is what it once was. I too paid over $3k for a shop that has been building transmission for 30 years. It was for a 94 F150 Lightning. It worked great for about a year, then one day it would not go into reverse, and only had a first gear. Since it was a reputable shop they went ahead and replaced the transmission no charge, but since it failed once before I never felt very confident in the transmission lasting that long and end up selling the truck.
Thanks for the replies i am gonna call the shop in the morning....but the filter coming unseated sounds promising
if anyone else has any other suggestions im all ears
what was the outcome...i'm interested to know because i have somewhat similiar issue...replaced some rotted transmission cooler lines and now the truck only episodically goes into reverse...i believe i put the same amount in that i drained out during the line change...new fluid seems at right level when i check warm and running in park...truck jerks into reverse when it does go...smooth shifting through 1, 2, 3rd gears but does whined out on occassion....could i still be low on fluid?
mark, thanks for quick reply...it is puzzling. would having too much fluid in there cause the same issue, because when I check it cold, i'm in the crosshatches...does the transmission uptake this fluid when it warms up? When i check it warm can't seem to get a bead on whether i have enough or not...tranny seems ok in first and shifts through second and third with some lag, missed timing points but would be able to live with it, except truck only goes into reverse intermittently. will work for awhile ( until I trust it) then won't go into reverse (like when I'm at the bank and now stuck)...help

The transmission holds about 20 quarts give or take. The difference between cold readings and hot readings is quite substantial. You need to take the truck out, get the transmission up to proper operating temperature and check the level. You will be surprised.
FWIW, if the dipstick shows close to full when cold then I can see the fluid expanding and being quite a bit overfull at that point. If that's the case the fluid will be getting churned in the planeteries and the clutch packs and foaming. If the transmission fluid foams that will affect pressures and shifting. It's better to have it under full than over full.
