Anyone run one of these or have played with ram air on a 460 or other gas engines looking to get the most out of the air system. More air equals better atomization currently has the K&N open element on it thinking of building something I help isolate it from the warm engine air. Maybe moving the coolant tank/washer tank back and pushing the filter forward.
Literally the 460 and the 300 had the BEST CAI that Ford designed. The snorkel ran up in front between the front clip and that was a CAI.
Who ever added the open element did so at a cost of an expensive filter, with less filtering capabilities and having to use an oil to catch trash. It also allows draws in HOT engine bay air. Hot are is less dense and produces less hp.
I tried that K&N crap almost 20 years ago and I yanked that trash of a filter off not even a year after owning because of lower MPG and my UOA were coming back with higher than normal silicate level.
No, on an EFI motor atomization is what the injectors do so the only way you can improve that is with a different set.

Yes, you could just put the stock airbox back on it wasn't that bad a design. If you don't have one the junkyard is your friend, all of these trucks used the same box it was just the snorkle that differed.
So on my 5.8 bronco it still has the factory box and the snorkel runs up between the hood and grille. Now if I remember correctly from my 4.9 bronco the snorkel was a lot bigger and was behind the grille am I correct in that? Can you put a 4.9/7.5 snorkel on the 5.8? I have always thought the open K&N under the hood was a noisy waste as it just drew hot air.

Yes you have that exactly correct, it is a common mod. Only potential downside is a lower induction point may be more water ingestion prone if you ever encounter deep water. Spring runoff in the mtn's has been the reason why I haven't done this mod as I end up crossing swollen creeks every year.
Yep, 300/460 tube wins here. Also stick to a conventional filter, no need for the so called performance ones.
Funny how Banks doesn't even seem to know what Ram Air is. Lol... Is that even the whole kit they offer? I can't say I see how that is worth doing.
I had the FIPK junk many years ago and was extremely disappointed. It offered no increase in performance or fuel economy, and I actually think the truck ran worse with it.
Yeah my 460 truck will never see water fording lol my bronco maybe but unlikely that deep. If I remember right on my 4.9 bronco I cut the little duck bill off the snorkel too
