Rocker arm noise

Sorry I don`t know a lot about engines, specially diesels, I used the wrong name in an earlier post. I`m having a noise from my engine that sounds like it`s a rocker arm ticking. It comes everytime I change my oil and only does it when the engine is warm to hot. It lasts for about the first 800 miles then magically disappears. Its very annoying and worries me. I have a 2008 6.4 diesel and I use shell Rotella T6 synthetic oil 5W40. Truck has 120,000 miles on it. Any ideas on this? Anything to add to the oil to stop the annoying ticking?

noise could be rocker tips, bent or cracked rocker arms, or worn rocker saddles, or bent push rods, or cam lobe wear, or lifter wear.

the changes in the noise due to warm or hot state of the engine is due t the thinning of the oil as it gets hot. thicker or cold oil will mask the noise.

That sounds right. Thank you. It sure is annoying I wonder if there is an additive to decrease it?

My buddy dealt with the same thing on his 08, I can ask him if he found anything that quiet it down.

That would be great, thank you. The mechanic here was suggesting Lucas oil or STP. I have read Lucas oil is not good for ford diesels but that maybe for the 6.0 L as they use oil pressure in start up. I may try a different oil in the next change.

I talked to my buddy and he said that just putting miles on the oil took care of it. I wouldn't use any additives like Lucas or STP - snake oil IMO.

I think you are heading in the right direction trying a different oil next time you change it.

Thanks for the info. That is exactly what have done in the past and it has gone away. Seems like a funny way to deal with a problem but if it works it works. I will try a different oil next time and see. I more thing if you know, does your buddy still have the truck? How many miles does he have and any other tips? I'm kind of married to the truck for the next couple years and I would like, if I can, to avoid big money fixes (like everyone else).
