I have a 2001 f150 i just purchased. It has 250,000 miles with 5.4L engine. It gets up to operating temperature, does not overheat. But is blowing out cold air. Looks like someone played with it and cut out part of lower dash next to glove compartment under controls. I feel blend doir partially operating but not blowing out hot air. When i change to panel no air blows out vents. It is vlowing out bottom and some defroster with being set in defrost. Any help greatly appreciated.
Feel the hoses to the heater core and verify that both of them are getting hot when the engine is warmed up.
If both don't get hot, the heater core is obstructed and will need to be flushed out or replaced.
The hole behind the glove box is the easy way to access the blend door for replacement. It is possible the blend door is broken again or was not installed correctly.
As to which vent location it blows from, there could be a vacuum leak, or the ducts may not be connected correctly inside the dash.
there are 3-4 different vacuum cylinders that open and close and direct the air to the defrost, dash, floor or combination... If you loose vacuum, the doors all close and the air goes to the Defrost. You need vacuum to pull the doors to the dash and floor areas.
As mentioned, the hole under the dash was made to get to the blend door --- I would look there and see if it works... maybe feel for hot air also.
There are lots of videos 97-03 F150 on YouTube, showing checking for a broken blend door and change procedure without removing the dash. Some of them also show how to check and replace the electric actuator that operates the door.
