1959 F100 223..Fuel pump has vacuum tubes on top for the wiper motor and a glass bowl on the bottom. Anyone know where to get a rebuild kit? Or who makes the fuel pump? Not sure I'm going to keep it original but have glass parts on my engine looked pretty cool. But I don't really need the vacuum lines because I'm going to replace the wiper motor anyway.
But I would like to keep it if the rebuild kit is available.
Fuel pumps sure can be more of a problem these days than they ought to be. NOS rebuild kits, if available, may not handle modern gasoline blends. They are now old in any case, and may not hold up to any gasoline for that matter. First thing to do though, is find out what you have, with a valid Ford part #. It's probably a Carter "X" or something like that. There may be some service replacement pumps still available from dealer closeout sellers on eBay. I found a glass bowl w/filter Carter for my slick. No telling how long it will last with modern fuel though. The output pressure at least, is in perfect spec though. More on that later.
There are also rebuilding services from outfits that use modern diaphragm materials that will hold up to ethanol. eBay has a pretty good supply of those vintage pump kits made with ethanol tolerant materials. Even just the sheet material is available. Viton. It's actually a little tougher to rebuild some of them than you might think. Not a show stopper, but. If there are a passle of screws securing the two housings together the pump is rebuildable. If they are just crimped together, it's not really practical.
It is very important that a replacement pump (any fuel pump) be tested for the correct pressure output. Excessive psi is a great way to cause flooding, or even a fire, and many of the import pumps are showing up with this problem. A mechanic's vacuum gauge, which you should already have, also tests fuel pump pressure. One commenter on another board measured 18 psi on a replacement pump! 5 psi is plenty.
