fuel pump packed up!!!!

Hi, Have read the search results on fuel pumps.......but mine has stopped pumping (worked fine yesterday) ...went to start it today & nothing....pulled the new pipe of the carb...turned it over and nothing...so i pulled the filter and small length of pipe off the pump & turned the engine over & a small squirt of fuel came out then nothing........my motor is a stock 1960 223....the fuel pump is the same as this

one..eBay Motors: FORD 223 FUEL VACUUM PUMP 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 -64 (item 310121619165 end time Mar-11-09 08:11:30 PDT)

The vacumn pipe that went to the wipers has been blocked off as i now run electric wipers.....I have been running i like this for the last month with no probs...my question is ...as i now don't need the vacumn outlet on the fuel pump can i use one of these pumps..?

eBay Motors: New fuel pump Ford truck 6 1955-1964 with 223 (item 350160024798 end time Feb-28-09 18:29:24 PST)=

thanks, steve.

Hi Steve,

I'm going to bump this back up to the top for you. Seems like a lot of posts got posted today but those in the know about the pumps weren't around.

This will get it back up for another look!

Don't know about the pump replacement, but have you checked to see if the line from the tank is clear? Undo the hose from the tank to the pump and see if gas flows feely. If not, remove the gas cap and see if that helps. Keep working your way back until you find free flowing gas. Replace or clear whatever is plugged. The fuel pumps of the era were pretty simple, a flexible diaphram that operated off an excentric with 2 check valves. Diaphram probably bit the big one. It's possible NAPA or PEP boys may be able to get you a new diaphram if your pump has a ring of bolts holding it together. I'd bet they even have rebuilt pumps available, Ford used parts like this for a long time.

If you're not using vac wipers you don't need a vac pump. I don't know why you could not use the cheaper priced pump on Ebay. I have a 60-223 with the same combo fuel/vac pump. Number Dummy told me that there are not any rebuild kits for them out there, any where. He did lead me to a parts guy that had a pump though. I did eventually find an original FoMoCo rebuild kit for it on Ebay. It's fairly amazing what shows up if you can have a little patience to wait for it!

Steve,

The pump you show in the 2nd link without the vacuum ports looks just like the one I put on my 223 when it needed a new pump. I got my from the local AutoZone. It was a special order item but came in only 2 days. I think it was pretty reasonable as well around $35. This was two years ago.

Good luck.

went out to the garage and found the paperwork on the pump I purchased, then checked the AutoZone website, here is what I got:
