Howdy! Helping the father in law with a special order. I'm familiar with the process as I custom ordered a 2018 F250. Just looking for any general tips, on engine, what is the best value on trim packages, etc. I was thinking a fairly barebones XL or STX
thank you!
needs:
supercab
8ft bed
4x4
tow package - pulling a ~ 5K travel trailer
power windows/doors
cruise
wants:
vinyl floor
not a ton of chrome
fogs
camera package/sync3 (do they even have this for STX?)
remote start
I spent a couple minutes with the configurator, and when I added the fog lights, it required the addition of the 101a package, which is a little over $2,000. As it happens, the 100a package includes the backup camera, so it "might" be possible to add the fogs after market and save yourself $1800 or so.
If he's going to pull a 5,000 lb trailer, he will also need a trailer brake controller (most states require a TBC if the trailer is over 3,000 lb).
My configuration ended up being a fairly plain XL. Black front bumper, and a shiny one in back.
He'd need to decide how important are the vinyl floors compared to other features? A good set of floor mats might suffice. The only trim to keep vinyl is to stay with the XL.
To get power windows/Locks/Cruise, you have to get the 101A in the XL I believe. I don't think you can get Sync3, remote start in XL.
STX would gain more features obviously, but at addt'l cost. Those addt'l features might be useless to him and he would never use. If so, stick with the XL. Around here, an STX with a longbox is even more rare than a SuperCrew longbox.
+1 on the TBC. Much easier from what I have heard to have that done as an OEM option at the factory vs aftermarket. That can be added on any level of trim iirc.
Also think about the larger fuel tank depending on what types of trips will be taking and in what part of the country where gas stations may be less frequent. Having that extra range, especially when towing when you are burning more fuel, could be a deal breaker.
This is an XLT with a vinyl floor option. This has Sync3 and fog lights and remote start. You have to go with chrome bumpers and grill on this. For some reason an XLT won't let you pick a Sport Pkg with an 8' bed.
I added tow mirrors and the reverse sensors. I built it with the Max Tow pkg, but you can go with a standard tow package if you want the 5.0.

Most cost effective way without going to XLT premium for the sync 3 is to go with the XL and the STX package. It's full chrome delete and includes body matching bumpers and grille surround. The next sure way to save money on the build is to go with the 3.5 and max tow package. That gives you the e locker, 36 gal fuel tank, 9.75 axle, max springs ( free bonus because it requires 20" wheels and the STX has them). Plus all the power equipment group with cruise control and upgraded gauge cluster.
I strongly suggest you add the heated tow mirrors because aftermarket isn't going to happen now that the AAT sensor is built into the right mirror on 2018+ trucks. The rear camera is a standard feature regardless of trim starting on all 2018+ vehicles. Save yourself the 145.00 and keep the vinyl floor selected.
Well I now see you wanted the 8' bed. Unfortunately what I said earlier won't work. The STX isn't available with the 8' bed. You would have to sacrifice some things to make the wheelbase change.
Must get the tow mirrors and larger fuel tank. Must. Must. Must.
After that it’s dealers choice. 5,000lbs is not that big a deal for any of the motors (maybe excluding the n/a V6). I’d get the Max tow package just on general principle, but it’s not required. The trailer brake controller is a food thing too.

Before ordering a vehicle, why not look around or do a search online at the remaining 2018 F150`s on dealers lots because they just might have a vehicle that fits your requirements.
A 2019 is the same as a 2018 and you "might" be able to get more truck for the same or less than a 2019.
