Ran a search on FTE forums and could not find anything posted. Most likely one of those questions to stupid to ask. Recently salvaged early model Bendix power steering unit and not sure if i can use standard power steering oil. i read that the type of lubricant used in ford auto trannys is important, but not sure about power steering units.
comments would be appreciated!
Except for a few Japanese imports, ATF is pretty much standard for all power steering units. All they really are is a hydraulic pump, valves and piston, so any hydraulic fluid would probably work. My '94 owners manual calls for ATF type F. Mercon/Dexron will also work just fine. Transmissions are sensitive to type of fluid because of the friction clutches and bands, not an issue in PS.
apparently, you and i were replying to my question at the same time. The chilton's book covers 65 thru 73, mustang and cougar. I would imagine the units are simular to my 66 bendix. It refers to "type A" transmission fluid, which i assume is generic for automatic transmission fluid. As for gear oil, 90 s.a.e.
