Recently bought a 04 6.0 excursion. The fuel gauge intermittently while driving will fall off below the empty mark. Sometimes it will go back to working while driving other times it won’t work until I shut it off and restart. It’s got 137k on the clock thus I’m assuming it sat quite a bit. I’ve added PS service fuel additive thinking it might be a lubrication issue and it seemed to help but still cutting in and out. I’ve been searching and other seem to think sending unit might Be bad. Just wonder if any other fixes before dropping the money on a sending unit replacement I plan to run at least one more round of fuel additive and another tank of fuel before having that replaced.
unfortunately, that's about it...the way the sending unit works is that portions of the electric ribbon can go bad and make it intermittent. I didn't want to buy a new one so I found one in a junkyard for 20 bucks and it's worked for the last 6months.
Yeah, there isn't much it could be other than the sending unit. I'm working on a similar issue and acutally watched it move up and down as I was driving down the road. It also doesn't report the fuel level correctly, when it's between quarter tank and empty, it's actually empty.
Ok so replacing that involves dropping the tank and pulling old unit correct? Is their aftermarket which is better or best to order oem for new. I’d prefer not to replace it and replace another in a year.
Yes, it's not a 'terrible' job. I honestly struggled with going OEM or aftermarket and settled on a used OEM. If I had to get new, I'd save up for an OEM or find one with a lifetime warranty at the big box stores, if that is available.
