There is only about an inch difference in total runner length between the truck and car intakes though so that ain't it, the 5.0HO actually makes more torque than the truck motor too. There has been lots of speculation about this over the years but the real reason is unknown so anybody's guess is as good as the next. Could have been a simple mixup.. an error in a drawing, or maybe there were other plans for the motor that got shelved and because there isn't a big downside to an intake that is a bit oversized there was no point in changing it. Also why don't both 5.0 and 5.8 motors use the same upper intake? The GT40 series of intakes share uppers so why not the plane jane version?
Interesting topic to speculate about. Didn't the 351 go FI later than the 302, like the 460? I wonder if they were worried about hood/firewall clearance on the 351, after they'd already designed the 302, and had to give it the smashed lower that we love so much. Also, the 351 intake is obviously awful for higher rpm operation, but I wonder how worthy it is for low rpm power production over a 302 intake? May have been some incentive there for ford at a time where low peak hp was the norm, and any low end available would fit into the formula of the day.

Oops, just shows how much I know! Hey Paul, would you happen to know the height dimensions of the car vs truck intakes? Planning on putting some Power by Ford into a buddy's CJ and everyone says a truck intake is too tall to fit under the jeep hood, but we don't want to spend money or try to find a car intake.

I also like to speculate about stuff like this, it's really neat. Yeah, the 351 and 460 got FI in '88 - last of the bunch. Here's another question: why did they design the 460 intake the way they did?
