Intermittent CEL

I have been getting an intermittent CEL for about 2 years now... It comes on randomly; but every time I drive her. Seems to go out if I accelerate or let off the pedal.

I was thinking it may be some sort of vacuum line or other... Not getting any codes though.

What are you using to read the codes?

That will read the codes, any mods or tuner? Some tunes with bring up the cell, I can get it in a hot tune combined with the red line mod but it goes away again.

Diesels don’t have vaccuum lines, this is why we have hydraboost brake systems.

If you are getting a CEL it could be from a tune you have running or a legitimate engine sensor detecting a problem. Either way, the Forscan app is a great, low-budget way to find out what it is, and also to find out how healthy many of your engines components are.

If you have CEL a code should be stored in the computer. I think they clear themselves after a bit but it should be there if you scan it right away.

Yes i have the tuner... It's a Hypertech Max Energy. I normally run it in stage 2 which is for towing. stage 3 is crazy power and I'm worried about the exhaust gas temps on that one and I dont want to burn a hole in a piston either.

I've been getting a CEL for just a flash on my rig, 1 second or so. Interested in what happens here. No stored codes yet. Only happens about once a week or two. I'll report back if I figure out what is causing mine.

Removing the tuner from the equation when troubleshooting is best practice. You may have luck with leaving the tuner installed but running the stock map if you have that option, but I would just completely remove it to be certain.

‘How many dead horses have you ridden? If it was more than 1 it couldn’t have been that bad.... Pull the chip, so you’re not chasing your tail.

My feeling is that if it doesn't set a code in memory, or keep the CEL lit, it can't be that big of a deal... but I admit I really don't know that for certain.

The most thorough examination would be to datalog while an event happens, and pour over the logs to see what parameter went out of range.
