So every now and then when I go to start my 97 7.3 the starter will just click. It's got hot batteries, if you keep cycling g the key and trying to start it the starter will finally engage and start the truck. Is this a starter issue or a solenoid issue? Starter cables and battery cables are good and tight.
I'm pretty sure it's just the starter. Not 100% sure, I'll pay closer attention next time it does it. I did try one to jumping off on the solenoid on the fender well. When all it would do is click I would leave the ignition in the on position and tried to jump it at the solenoid on the fender and the starter would still just click.
If you buy a 'noid, stick with Motorcraft only. Lots of debates on starters, but stay away from the OEM unit. Go at least an offset 7.3 SD unit or a Denso.
Also, I would start by cleaning the cables and making sure they are not ****ty.
Mine recently did the same thing. Turned out to be the starter. Replaced it with the high torque for an '03. Turns over really fast and starts really quick.
