U-Haul F350's came with the 330 2V Medium Duty, and the parts catalog listing is 1973/77.
The 330XD is listed in the VIN engine codes for 1975/78, its code is D but there's no mention of it in the FT engine parts section, so it may have been a D.S.O. only.
I can only assume my 1979 F-350 (retired) U-Haul still has the original (DSO) 330 XD engine in it. I was told when I bought it, that it had been rebuilt 25,000 miles before I bought it. The pictures that are posted above and here, are of my truck (taken in my driveway).
It indeed has a steel crankshaft in it, as the front mount for the harmonic balancer has a 1 3/4" outside diameter, and not the 1 3/8" o.d. of an FE. You can see in the engine photo that it has the HD cast iron timing chain cover, and the dual thermostat arrangement. I suspect the bracket on the right side of the firewall had something to do with the engine rpm governor. It also had an oil bath air cleaner, which I replaced with a tall K&N.
I actually drove one of these U-Haul 14' box trucks from Michigan to El Paso, Texas around 1976-1977. Crossing the 7,843 foot Raton Pass was interesting, as these trucks came with a New Process 435 (creeper gear 4 speed). I had to climb the pass in creeper gear, and with the Dana-Spicer 70 4.11 ratio rear axle, I suspect it was at about 5 miles per hour.
That U-Haul rental had a very annoying cold air leak coming from above the right foot well cowl vent. My 1979 also had the same leak! Upon investigation, I came to realize that when the aftermarket radio and antenna was installed, they removed the 2"(?) diameter plastic plug to feed the antenna wire through the cowl, and it left a permanent air leak. I wonder if all of those (hundreds of) plugs were just pushed in, and left lying in the bottom of the housing?
We have been in the middle of a polar-vortex here in Michigan. When it warms up, I will post pix of data plates and other identifying items of my 1979.

Bill I received the basic Marti Report on the truck in question. The engine code shows as "Z" with a description "DSO Specified Engine". Also it has a 6 digit DSO meaning it was a special order (Custom fleet spec). Truck was built in May of 1979. I have been trying to get a hold of the truck's owner to let him know that Kevin Marti was very interested and wants to get more info about his truck for his a project that he is working on.
