Here are some of the characteristics. The block is a skirted design meaning that the block continues down below the crankshaft centerline. When seen head on this makes it look like a Y. The distributor is in the left rear of the engine. They have stacked intake ports rather than side by side. They have long strokes with small bores (3.3" stroke x 3.75" bore = 292, 3.44" stroke by 3.80" bore = 312, etc.) which means that they are very torquey but they can still make a lot of horse power and put small blocks (and some big blocks) to shame. Two good sites to look at are "www.ford-y-block.com" and "www.y-blocksforever.com." You can find great info on both of these sites and they have links to other great sites.

The skirt on a y-block is about the same as on an FE. Both engines cost about the same to rebuild. You can find more performance parts for the FE.

The early Lincoln and Ford Y's were the first attempt at an OHV. What they learned led to the FE which shares many common traits. Based upon the long production life of the FE/FT I guess they got it figured out pretty good.

However Ive never understood why the 428 and Boss 428 was such a dog on the strip against the big Chebbys.
I have to admit deep affection for the 396/427 Bowties.

The others defined it very well. I would just like to add what makes it unique to me and that's that its a Y-BLOCK! If I'm right they only made them for a few years in late 50's early 60's. And they are Tough and can be built up nicely.

My favorite part is unless your talking to someone here, when your showing off or talking about your truck, and say Y-Block Most people dont know what your talking about. Then it gives you something else to Explain (BRAG) about. How cool and unique not just your truck is, but motor as well. Like the flathead 8 did. The Y-Block is making a bigtime comeback. The writing is on the walls, even here on FTE, maybe Especialy on FTE. Even though many have other prefferences, From my observations many also see its popularity and comeback. I am a Proud Y-Block convert thanks to FTE.

P.S. I'm speaking more in general and not for any one on FTE inparticular.
