Tailgate years

Im hunting for a tailgate, my truck was missing when i bought it. Do older gen tailgates fit? If so up to what year? Thanks

87 threw 97 as long as the 97 isn't the new body style F150'F250. The latches on the 80-86 are different than the 87 on.
