how do i identify what transfer case i have, i have a transfer case attatched to a C6 transmission, i want to sell it and would liek to knwo what case it is. im not sure what year truck it came out of.
any help would be great
ok, i cleaned it all up and looked for a tag of somesort and couldnt find anything, so ill try to detail a description as best as i can. big, blue two flat sides adn two round drums.
okay now let me tr harder, lookign like a normal transfer case more the less it has the obvious round aera where it attatches to teh transmission and it has another round section where the front shaft comes out inbetween teh sides are flat. on the bottom side there is a rectangular removal plate, i assume its an inspection plate of some sort.the shifter is short, and coems out the left side. its behind a C6 transmission, has the normal lookign coupler to the tranny. i will try and post pictures as soon as i can get ahold of a camera.
Hmmmm, if you were to tell me it was cast iron i would have to say it was either a NP 203 or NP 205. Since you dont know what truck it came out of, theres the off chance it could be a Dana 20(?) model. Can you tell if it is full or part time? One more thing, are there any mounting holes or brackets on the drivers side otput area?
im not sure what it really means when people call it full or part time, it is a shiftable case, 4 detents 2h 4h n 4l i assume. i believe it is cast iron, it has that texture to it, it came out of either a f150 or maybe a 250. not sure of the year tho.
i went otu at nigth with my flashlight and found the tag, it reads as follows:
D9TA7A195ub
1 4 79 69 205
im assuming this means its a np205? it is cast iron and there is also a mounting bracket on teh drivers output side. its a normal lokign bracket, 90bend and onehole for a bolt to go to probably the frame?
It is a NP 205 if it is heavy it wieghs about as much as the C6 I know because I have carried both seperatly. The NP 205 has the shift lever connect to the tranfer case by one rod connected to to so like this --= kind of crappy but if it's really heavy it is probably a NP 205.
Motorhead, you unquestionably have an NP 205. BTW full time 4-wd means that there is no way to shut off the power to the front axle. i.e. NP 203, because it is chain driven, there is no way to disengage the chain. The most common means around this is to install lockout hubs in the front. There is a kit from Milemarker that I purchased and installed that works well. An NP 205 is gear driven, and can be on or off. Hope this helps.

On the front of the case near the front output shaft, there should be an aluminum plate with the model number on it. You can see it on the right hand photo.
