Im working on replacing the rotted dipstick on my 2011 6.2. I had it in a shop to replace it, long story short, I was having my drivers side manifold replaced. After the removed the old dipstick he told me the passenger side manifold needs to come off to do the repair. Since I wasn't planning on adding an additional $1k onto this repair I opted for them to plug the hole and I would change the oil more frequently.
Plug is no longer plugging after about 1500 miles.
Most everyone I talk to complains about how hard it was to get the old one out but doesn't give much insite on installation of the new one. I also assume since the motor hasn't been out for 20 years its not too popular of an issue. Although when I was on Facebook alot of people said theirs rotted out. I was talking to a few people on the internet that have said they did the job without removing the manifold so here's where I am..
I have removed the inner fence, starter, battery, washer fluid tank and battery tray. I can see everything that needs to be done but because of the bends in the dipstick tube I can't get it fish threw the manifold and behind the motor mount. I'm talking to a guy right now on youtube that said he did it with only removing the mount.
Is there anyone out there that did this repair first hand? I feel like all of the help I'm being advised with is either second hand or what they think their mechanic did..
2 basic questions I suppose: Did you need to remove the motor mount? And if so how did you go about doing that? Where you able to replace the tube without removing the manifold?
I’m about 90% sure it can be done without removing the manifold. I have it pushed behind it and the only thing that’s keeping me about two inches away is the motor mount. I don’t even think I need to take the frame side of the mount off. Just the motor side.
Any input on the best way to remove the mount? Can I take the bolt out of the rubber bushing, remove the 4 bolts that go in the block and only remove the top half of the mount?
Thank you so much! After spending some time staring at it I figured removing the motor mount still wouldn’t give me the clearance I need. The issue with my manifolds is when the shop was doing the other side every bolt broke. I had the truck in there getting several things done and the broken dipstick tube was on the list. I wish he would have looked up the repair order before removing the old one. The broken one wasn’t leaking. I was already pushing $2k with the work that was done I wasn’t about to have them drill out 8 more bolts or however many there are when doing an additional manifold.
I ended up cutting the new dipstick tube about 3 inches high, threading it, and shoving a bolt in it. Should be a better plug than whatever was done before. I’m going to have the manifold replaced this coming summer when we get back to working again. This is definitely temporary but at least I can get the truck on the road here and there. I really hate half assing things!
