I am going to try and describe what has happened. I had just change the oil in my 01 - F350, Fuel Filter, added 1 qt of Lucas Oil conditioner, Lucas Fuel additive to clean injectors. It had been a little over 100 miles since I did the service. I was driving down the interstate when I felt a shutter in the steering wheel (sounds crazy right) but then I noticed the engine loosing power. I pushed the petal to the floor and it would not pick-up any speed. I noticed a white smoke coming from the tail pipe. The truck started to miss and it went for possibly 2 miles before I cut it off. Once I tried to crank it back, it did start and ran for a few minutes before dying. Since it has been down, I have replaced the fuel filter, rebuilt the fuel filter housing, (o-rings and new line gaskets at the fuel bowl housing) installed a new fuel pump (on the rail under the drivers seat). After doing this, I can crank the truck but I have to wind on the starter. it will only run for a few seconds before dying. I try to crank it again but again I have to wind on the started and pump the pedal. I have tried ATF in the fuel filter housing but it would still only run a few seconds before dying. Any suggestions as to what could be happening? Oh, the truck only has 75,000 miles on it. I bought it a year ago and it had 53,700 on it when I bought it.
Rather then us guess, why not get Forscan or a similar program so you can see what is it is not happening ? With some info from the PCM we could likely diagnosis quickly.
but from your description of white smoke and died while driving down the road.... I guess CPS or maybe HPOP
edit.... on second thought I am going with CPS because of the milage. My guess is you have the original black cps.
Sorry I omitted this earlier & thanks for your quick responces.
1 - I have installed a new CPS when I purchased the truck. I asked the previous owner if he had ever change it and he said no. So I purchased a (if not mistaken) a grey in color CSP unit.
2 - I just changed the oil less than 100 miles ago. I have not checked it, but there is not any oil on the ground/driveway where I park.
3- If it was the CSP would I get a check engine light? I have not had any check engine lights.
4- It does have a Hyper-tech Program installed. Just from a handheld unit. I tried to un-install it but it kicked me out saying that the VIN number was not correct. This was after I had gone through 1/2 of the removal process. I have driven the truck several thousand miles since then without any issues.
5- Yes the Tach does move to approx 150 to 200 rpms
6 - I just installed 2 new batteries also. The old batteries were 6 year old.
One more thing. The reason I rebuilt the Fuel Filter Housing was because the filter housing drain valve was leaking and I could smell fuel when I was at slow speeds or backing up. There was a whole lot of fuel in the valley when I removed the housing.
1) check your engine oil level. That white smoke could have been oil.
2) Try unplugging the ICP sensor and see if it starts any better.
3) Don't add oil treatments to the oil in an HEUI system. The additives tend to make the oil foam because they can't handle the shear from the HPOP.
You could also open your fuel bowl drain valve and verify that fuel is flowing through the bowl. The stem is a shut off valve and it can get disturbed and prevent fuel from flowing through.
1- I will try unplugging the ICP and see if that will help.
2- I have opened the drain valve and fuel does flow out of the drain line.
3- I will also check the oil level.
Again thanks for the information. I am clueless when it comes to diesels.
Congrats on finding a low-mileage 7.3. Those are rare.
Ditto on trying new oil. I've never run Lucas or looked into it, but it sounds like a thickener, which is not going to do you any good, especially in the winter.
Are you running 15W40? T6 5W40 is nice in winter months, and will make it start much easier, run smoother when cold. Lots of us run it. 15W40 wouldn't shut you down on the freeway but the Lucas? If it's a thickener in 15W40 it just might.
One thing about these engines, you don't need any additives in your oil. Ever. Fuel? Perhaps, but not ATF... Where the hell did you hear to do that? I'd recommend not doing that ever again. Maybe ATF from like 30 years ago, but modern **** has too much in it. Here is a good source for fuel additive info: https://www.thedieselstop.com/forums...-study-231198/
Well, I went out this am and unplugged the ICP with no luck starting. I decided to check the oil level and low & behold, It is not touching the dip stick!!! Now my concerns have shifted to what happened. I check the drain plug and it is dry, no oil around the filter, there is some oil on the transmission cross member. I will refill with oil & change the filter as suggested and see if it will crank. When doing my oil change I used 4 gallons of Delo 400. Where can it be going? No signs of a leak on my concrete driveway so something must have happened when I was driving it.

Thanks
The smoke out the exhaust when the truck originally quit could be that a seal in the turbo went bad. Top off the oil and see what you get once it starts running. Also, pull the turbo and check for oil in the exhaust side.
To answer the question concerning the ATF on the fuel filter housing. It was suggested to do that to help prime the injectors IF there was air in the system. Also I live in Alabama and I am running 15/40.
Thanks for all of your knowledge sharing. you guys are awesome and very helpful!!!! I will let you know what happens when I change the oil again in a few.
