So my '76 has an issue with the HD headlight kit. The P.O. installed it and said that for some reason all the light come on in either the parking light or headlight position, even the highs. The high beam switch does nothing. He said he followed the instructions and this is what happen.........I let it go for a while never really gave it much thought. Well, me being me, I have to touch. From all the postings I can find, all I see is that they are a simple plug and play item. Correct me if I am wrong here. So I decided to get out the wiring diagram and followed it from the firewall to the and all looks un-molested until you get to the 4-prong plug next to the battery. There are extra wires spliced in and run to the sockets, then he cut the original sockets off and caped the ends???? Well I tried to figure out what he did without the instructions and by searching on here. I gave up after a couple hours cut my losses and ordered left and right headlight harnesses starting at that 4 prong socket off of feebay, should be here in a couple days. Does the cut and splice part of this sound correct to anyone here?
When you say HD headlight kit are you referring to the relay kit a lot of guys on here use? Like the one from LMC? Truck Parts and Truck Accessories
I used that kit and there was absolutely no cutting or splicing.
I bought 2 of the relay kits years ago for car I have yet to install in.
My son used 1 of the kits on his Jeep YJ and there is not cutting of any wires.
That is one of the reasons why I bought them.
Could you post up pictures of what you got and this 4 way plug?

This is like the harness on the truck (internet pic), but the headlight sockets are cut off and capped and there are extra wires teed in after the 4 prong plug (far right bottom of pic). And yes it is the same type of kit if not the exact same from LMC. From what your saying, my suspicions are correct and they are supposed to be plug and play. Awesome!!!! can't wait to figure out why the backup lights only work on a switch mounted under the dash....... I think I might be ordering a Painless harness for this thing.
Based on that internet pic, the bottom right plug goes to the main harness and should follow up towards the firewall. The socket above that is for the turn signal. The little bulb next to it is for the side marker. There's a ring terminal above that which is for your ground. And last but not least, the plug on the far left is for the headlight. If this section of wiring is hacked up, you can get a donor and swap the whole thing out. If the PO hacked up the wiring past where that bottom right plug goes, then you'll have to make some repairs with a soldering iron perhaps.
Your switch for the reverse lights is on the steering column for 76. It's part of the neutral safety switch. It could be broken. Maybe it was hooked up to a separate switch by a PO because they couldn't figure out how to replace the neutral safety switch or align it. Electrical stuff is fun.
Yeah he's showing the stock harness and saying the PO spliced in the relay kit into it. That's my understanding anyway.
That is exactly that, at least from what I am seeing, he did. Well I found a couple of the oem harnesses should have them for this weekend. Hopefully I can straighten this out.
