I have a 2003 F150 King Ranch 4x4. It has the 5.4L engine. I want to add on board air to it. I have a Sanden a/c compressor, a tank, a pressure switch, and some relays. I know the plumbing and the electrical. My problem is finding a way to add this compressor to my existing serpentine belt configuration so it can run off the engine.
The air system will be used to air up tires, an air horn, and maybe an occasional impact gun in emergency cases only.
You have to be joking!
The intended uses call for a larger tank and 150 psi to run a an impact long enough to be useful at high torque.
The compressor will load the motor as the pumping pressure goes up with no control of engine speed other than the idle feed back from the crank sensor.
Room to Mount the compressor and line up with the drive belt will be an issue besides belt grip and tension.
Better rethink this and go with a gas powered unit in the box.
Good luck.
if all you want to do is play with the air a little...... get an electric motor operated pump with a small tank... that will fill tires and blow off dirt... If you want to loosen a couple bolts, OK... if your doing heavy impact work, then you need a big gasoline unit like Bluegrass said.
agreed, this type will provide enough for an air horn and to dust stuff off but not for impact work.
as for the use of portable impact, consider a cordless(battery) unit. a coworker has a Mac branded(built by DeWalt) unit and swears by it. Cordless has come a long way.
There are several 12v air compressors that will fulfill your needs ..... Take a look at the Viair line of electric On Board Air systems these are very popular in the offroad scene. You can add a larger tank if you want more capacity
