Alternator squeals on start-up? Read this! (and how can I turn off my alternator?)
For YEARS my van would squeal upon startup, hot or cold, always.... I even upgraded the alternator to the aux capacity version, and put new premium belts on every time I took them off to fix something, including replacing the alternator once thinking that was the problem.
Come to find out (on another thread on here) that the higher capacity alternators have a heavy load even at low RPMs, so upon start up they are working super hard. The single belt (even though it's a new pulley and new belt...and sometimes even dual belt set ups) often isn't enough to keep the load from causing the belt squealing.
Once I read the thread on this, I went out and unplugged my alternator, and for the first time in 5+ years my van started without even a chirp.
Below is the plug (only two wires) going into the alternator, is there a simple solution to interrupting the alternator use? I was thinking to put a toggle switch on a long wire into the cab, so I could interrupt the wires to the alternator when I started up the van, and once I was on the highway I could flip the switch and the alternator would be "on" again... and the load on the alternator would be at higher RPM's and not slip, and even if it did a little, wouldn't wake my neighbors every time I started up the van.
oes this sound like a solution that would work, provided I don't mind dealing with the toggle switch?

Really? I want the best most reliable altenator.... what should I get and from where, would you suggest? Here's a photo of the tag on the one I have now... it was an upgraded output from Napa. At this point I'm willing to go back to the original size one, but if there is a better one, please let me know...
Money is not an issue in this instance. Thanks!

I converted to a 130 amp 3g alternator. I used a Ford Taurus alternator. It bolted right in the oem bracket. I have a 75 f250. With a single V belt the squealing was terrible. I had to put on a 2 belt pulley. That resolved the issue. Other guys have converted to a serpentine belt system to fix the problem.
